“A glamour.” Twilight sank onto the couch. “I should’ve thought of that myself, but there aren’t many dhampirs who can power a glamour.”

“Eat,” I said. “You’ll feel better.”

“Iamhungry.” She looked at the food without moving.

Sitting on the couch next to her, I dipped a spoon into the chowder and brought it to her mouth.

“Mm.” Her eyes closed in that look of pleasure that always made me hot. “Your cook makes the best chowder.”

“That’s what they tell me.” I fed her another spoonful. “They catch the fish and lobster right off the island.”

“You don’t know what you’re missing.” She took the spoon from me and began feeding herself.

“Yeah?” Maybe not, but then she didn’t know what she was missing by not being a blood drinker—the flavors, the nuances from one human to the next. No two humans tasted the same, just as no two humans had the same scent.

Twilight finished the chowder, then broke off a piece of bread and ate it with a hunk of cheese. “You were right,” she said with a tentative smile. “I did need to eat. Thank you.”

I grunted, irritated that she kept thanking me. I wasn’t a monster, after all. She was hungry, so I’d fed her.

“The sooner you’re better, the sooner I can fuck you.”

Her smile faded, and I felt a little like that monster after all.

Cain returned with the news that Avril was safely in a cell. “Make sure she’s fed,” I said. “And give her blankets, that sort of stuff.”

“Already done. I told William to make sure she’s taken care of. But she swears she knew nothing about the first note, and I believe her. Her words had the taste of truth.”

“So this guy, Kuro, somehow got to Twilight on the plane?”

“Either that or someone else is working with him,” said Cain. “Maybe Twilight’s right and one of the thralls is helping him.”

“He could’ve bribed someone to pass the note,” said Twilight.

Fuck. I had to regain control of the situation, and fast. “Text Talon and tell him to come back. I want him to hear this.”

Cain nodded and took out his phone.

“What can I do?” Twilight yawned and scrubbed at her eyes.

“Get some sleep.” I scooped her off the couch, blanket and all, and started toward the bedroom.

She groaned and I stilled. “Did I hurt you?”

“Not really. I’m just a little stiff.”

Which meant she was probably very stiff, and sore, too. Not only had she fought off my father, she’d sat in wet clothes for hours on a cold stone floor.

“Put me down.” She pushed at my shoulder. “I can’t sleep—not yet. You need me to help find Kuro.”

“You’re no use to me like this.” Closing the bedroom door with my foot, I lowered her onto the duvet and stripped off her clothes.

She wrinkled her nose. “I need a shower. I smell like wet basement.”

“You can take one when you wake up.” I tucked the blanket around her.

“’Kay.” She yawned and rolled onto her side. “But don’t let me sleep too—” Her eyes closed and she was out.

That’s when it hit me. I’d almost lost her. She could’ve died.
