I stared down at her, stomach knotted. I was actually grateful that Kuro prick had slipped her a blade. If he hadn’t, Jules would’ve tortured and drained her like he had Gwen.

And in retaliation, I would’ve torn my father’s fucking head off. I wouldn’t have stopped to consider the consequences.

It might have been me in a cell right now.

Talon returned. I gave myself a shake and pulled on a clean shirt, then returned to the living room, closing the bedroom door behind me.

Talon and Cain were seated on a couch, speaking in low voices. Talon’s knowing look made me frown.

I sank onto a chair catty-corner to them. “What?”

“She’s your mate,” he said.

My frown increased. “She accepted my blood bond. Of course, I’m going to take good care of her. Doesn’t mean she’s my mate.”

Cain’s mouth had dropped open. He shut it with an audible click. “Actually, that explains a lot.”

“Like what?” I demanded.

“Like why you blood-bonded yourself to a slayer when you knew it would give Prosper the perfect excuse to challenge you.”

Talon looked at Cain and gave a tiny shake of his head.

I ground my back teeth together. “She’s. Not. My. Mate.”

Cain lifted a shoulder. “You would know.”

“Of course I would. And I wanted Prosper to challenge me. I didn’t want to spend the next six months dancing around him. Better to settle this now before it splits the syndicate apart.”

“Makes sense,” Talon said as if he were humoring me.

“She’s human,” I said, goaded. “Purebloods don’t mate with humans.”

“Blood goes to blood,” murmured Cain. “That’s what the old ones say, anyway.”

“Exactly,” I said.

Vampires might fuck humans, but when it came to forming a permanent bond, we looked to our own kind.

Talon snorted.

My mouth tightened. “You have something to say?”

“The old ones also say we should’ve never stopped trafficking in humans when the money’s so easy, but like you say, the world’s changed. We can make plenty of money with legit investments—and without the hassle. So what if Twilight’s human? You can always turn her. She won’t be a pureblood, but I’m not, either.”

“Or me,” Cain muttered.

I glanced between their impassive faces. “Hell, I didn’t mean to insult you. You guys are my brothers. You know that.”

“We know,” said Cain.

“No insult taken,” said Talon.

“Good.” I put my hands on my thighs. “Cain, I want you to work on tracking down Kuro. See if you can find out if he’s really on the SI Board of Directors, and if there are any dhampirs on the SI Board who can power a glamour. Rafe Kral might know—tell him that you’re asking for me. His father’s on the Board now.”

As Twilight had said, not many dhampirs had enough magic to generate and hold a glamour. If we could discover who on the BOD had the ability, it might be a way to nail the bastard.

Cain nodded. “Should I talk to Kerry and William—see if they’ve hired any staff recently?”
