I hung over her, feeding, my dick pulsing inside her. Then I licked the tiny punctures and withdrew from her, rolling onto my back and bringing her with me.

Neither of us stirred until her stomach growled. We got up and she ordered some food from the kitchen, then we showered.

While Twilight was eating, Talon texted me that Eden had left the island.

I immediately called him back. “What do you mean, Eden’s gone?”

“She left—snuck away in the middle of the day when most of us were sleeping. Said goodbye to her parents, packed a bag and hitched a ride with a fishing boat to the mainland.”

An emotionless recitation of facts, but I knew Talon had a special affection for the curvy blonde.

“You’re sure she left of her own free will?”

“I’m sure. The fishing boat captain confirmed it.”

I swore under my breath. “Let me know if you hear anything.”

“I will—I sent Adrian to Halifax to see if he can pick up her trail.”

“Good choice.” Adrian was a young, tech-savvy dhampir soldier.

Talon heaved a breath. “Look, I’ve got it handled. I wouldn’t have bothered you, but I thought you should know. Now forget about Eden and enjoy your new mate.”

“Thanks.” I hesitated, then added, “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” he replied in a hard voice. “She’s only a thrall—and when I find her, she’s the one who’s going to be sorry.”

I grunted and ended the call. He was right. We’d have to make an example of Eden.

Twilight screwed up her nose. “So Eden was involved in this somehow?”

“Looks like it.”

Twilight worried her lower lip. “Something was wrong, though. I found her crying in the Bite Club bathroom one night.”

“Then she should’ve been honest about it, whatever it is.” I shook my head. “No, she broke the rules; she knows the consequences. Are you done eating?” I asked, firmly changing the subject. “Because I thought we could go for a walk on the beach.”

She looked like she wanted to say more about Eden, but one look at my set face and she swallowed whatever it was and got to her feet. “I’d like that.”

Outside the night was crisp and clear. We took off our shoes and walked barefoot along the shore, holding hands, our pants rolled up so we could kick our feet through the surf. When a pile of rocks blocked our way, we scrambled over it, leaping down to the beach on the other side.

Twilight sparkled up at me. “It’s so beautiful out here tonight.”

I had to kiss her—her face was so alive, so beautiful in the moonlight—so I did.

We continued walking along the water’s edge, our linked hands swinging between us. “I want to hold our mating ritual as soon as possible,” I said. “Make it official.”

She nodded. “It will send a message to the syndicate—and the other syndicates. We should invite the primuses who are your main allies.”

“That’s what I was thinking. But it’s important to me, too. I want to have the whole island at the reception—I want everyone to know how proud I am that you accepted my claim.”

She released my hand. “About that...”

“Yeah?” I prompted.

“I can ask for a mate-gift, right?”

I bit back a smile. “So you want jewelry after all?”
