“It’s not that.” She wrapped her arms around me. “You’ve got this. It was smart, the way you handled Prosper.”

I shrugged. “He helped make the syndicate what it is today. It would’ve been a waste to lose him.”

“I guess so.” She leaned her cheek against mine. “But he was also the last link to your parents, wasn’t he? That’s why you didn’t stake him.”

I shook my head. “That’s not why—” I sucked a breath through my teeth. “Well, maybe it was part of it. You know, all I ever wanted was Jules’s respect. Not his love. Just his fucking respect. And the bastard made Prosper promise to challenge me. A final test.”

She sighed. “I know.”

I set my jaw. “I was never enough. No matter what I did, I was never enough.”

“I get it.” Her arms tightened on me. “And I’m so sorry. It’s like me and my mom. I was always trying to live up to her reputation. Even when they shoved me into a coffin-sized box to see how long it would take until I broke, I took it. I fucking gritted my teeth and stuck it out until I passed out from lack of air.”

“Why the hell didn’t you leave sooner?”

Her mouth twisted wryly. “They were my family. But hey, you won. You beat Prosper. You passed your father’s test. You’re the primus now, so to hell with Jules.”

My chest expanded with a sense of rightness. Not pride, although that was part of it. Rightness.

“Yeah, I did pass his fucking test. My father would’ve staked Prosper, you know. He would’ve said that only a weak man would let him live.”

“But you knew Prosper still had something—some worth to the syndicate—so you allowed him to make his own choice. That’s not weak, Brien—that’s a kind of strength Jules wouldn’t have understood. I didn’t know your father, but I’ve seen enough vampires like him to know how they think.”

I considered that. “You’re right. To him, everything was about balancing the scales. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life.”

“Fuck Jules.” She nuzzled my cheek. “You’re going to make a good primus. I know it.”

I combed my fingers through her hair. “Thank you.”

She still hadn’t told me what was bothering her, but one thing I’d learned from Jules was patience. I could wait. And then we were kissing.

Slow, deep kisses that were almost like a conversation.

I want you. I want to hear you make those moans. I want to make you beg. And I want to be inside you when you break.

Yes. Now.

Not yet.

You’re so—

Sexy as fuck?

A low chuckle.Yeah. That.

We couldn’t actually read each other’s minds, but we were so attuned, emotionally, through our new bond that it felt almost like we could.

I pressed her onto the mattress, stopping only long enough to remove her clothes before taking her in my arms. She twined her arms and legs tightly around me.

Now that I could sense her emotions, fucking her was an endless smorgasbord of sensuality, her pleasure adding to mine. I kept her on the edge for long minutes, teasing us both, and when I finally pressed into her, she climaxed almost immediately.

I rounded my back so I could suck her nipples. When I sensed her starting to climb again, I sank my fangs into the smooth curve of her breast, sucking hard. Her blood filled my mouth, rich and spicy with the special essence that was Twilight.

She breathed my name and arched up to me, her slick inner walls squeezing my cock.

“Mine,” I ground out.

The small of my back tightened. I thrust a last time and emptied myself into her.
