My grave.

We must be in the secret cavern.

A shovel scraped. Sand hit my legs. I moaned, my skin so sensitive it felt like hundreds of tiny insects stinging me.

Breathe. You can do this.

But I couldn’t breathe. I was dead.

Panic clawed at my brain like a small, furry animal.

“No!” I managed to force the words past my numb lips. “I can’t.”

“It’s too late.” Brien’s tone was raw with regret. “The transformation has already started.”

Another wave of pain slammed into me. I groaned and thrashed on the sand.

Another wave hit, then another and another.

I could no longer move. A scream built in me, louder and louder, but my vocal cords weren’t working anymore so it reverberated in my head without the relief that would’ve come from releasing it.

Brien touched my face. “Let go, sweetheart. Let it take you.”

The sand struck my face. I was covered in sand now.

I braced myself for another surge of panic, but it didn’t come. In fact, I felt…nothing. No panic, no pain, no fear at being buried alive.

Just endless, blessed nothingness. A void with no end.

I let go and welcomed it with open arms.

* * *

Iwas a lotus, dreaming under the starry night sky, my roots in the mud, my petals unfolding like angel wings to reveal a series of mysteries too much for any one mind to contain.

Pain.

Death.

Oblivion.

Exhilaration.

Rebirth.

I drifted for hours, days, centuries. I was smothered in sand, but it didn’t matter. Light and oxygen weren’t necessary.

Survival depended on my inner power, and now I drew on it.

I’m Twilight, daughter of Shade, granddaughter of Gho….

But no. I wasn’t my mom, and I wasn’t my halmoni. Being heir to their legacy was important, but it wasn’t the source of my power.

I’m the source.

Yes. That was it.

I dreamed some more. But I was back in this world now, on Lilith Island. The ocean surged; seagulls shrieked; Brien spoke in a low murmur to Cain, or maybe Talon.
