My stomach tightened, my body recalling all over again how Brien had left me unsatisfied.

I faded back into the crowd, though. If I didn’t, I had a feeling I was going to be joining Lesa and her vampire for a threesome, and I didn’t want that. I wanted Brien.

I danced for a few more minutes, then headed back to the bar. My head was spinning. Maybe that last margarita hadn’t been a good idea after all.

Chad found a bottle of mineral water for me and I stood near the bar, sipping it and watching the dancers.

Clarisse and the male thrall had disappeared. With any luck, he’d keep her busy for the rest of the night—and away from Brien.

And why did I care so much about who Brien fucked?

I frowned and smacked the green bottle down on the bar.

Chad appeared. “Something wrong?”

“No.” I gave him a brilliant smile. “I changed my mind. I think I would like another margarita.”

He grinned back. “Coming right up!”

I was gulping the margarita when Jasper approached with another man. “Hey.” He gave me one of his shy smiles. “You having fun?”

I raised my glass to him. “Sure am.”

“This is Eugene.” He nodded at the elegantly dressed, dark-haired man.

I raised my glass to him as well. “Nice to meet you, Eugene.”

His blue eyes met mine in an intense, William-Dafoe stare. “And you.”

“You settling in all right?” asked Jasper

“I am, thanks. It’s a beautiful place.”

“Good, good.”

We talked for a few minutes with Eugene standing silently by. Even when I asked him a direct question, his response was a curtyesorno. It was awkward AF; when they finally moved off, I heaved a relieved exhale.

Pinky popped up at my elbow. “Jasper’s cute, isn’t he?”

“Yeah. But I’m not so sure about Eugene.”

“He has to warm up to you. They were both born to thralls. Eugene’s been around as far back as I can remember, but Jasper’s only been a Maritime man for five years or so.”

“Team Brien?”

“Yeah. Jasper’s mom didn’t want him to be part of the syndicate, so she never told his father about him. Brien found him working in an office and hating it. He’s kinda like a big puppy, isn’t he?”

“Yeah.” My mouth twitched. “I like him.”

“Me too. With him, what you see is what you get.”

That’s how the next hour went, with the syndicate’s enforcers and soldiers giving me the onceover and then either moving on or welcoming me to the island.

One by one, the other thralls were claimed for the night. The word must’ve gone out that I was Brien’s. That probably shouldn’t have sent something hot and fizzy bubbling through me, but it did.

I blamed it on the alcohol.

Eden returned from the bathroom and started dancing again. No one but me seemed to notice how her partying seemed feverish, like a woman who was holding herself together by a thread. Or maybe she was always like that.
