My shoulders rose and fell again, “I guess it’s a good thing I’m sleeping next to you and not him then, right?”

“Sticks was right.”

“Huh, right about what?”

“He said you were going to get one of us killed before the end of things and at the time, I didn’t know your name should be thrown into the hat with the rest of ours. If you keep fucking with Mordy, he’ll see it as one of his games, Bird. You don’t know him like I do.”

“Might not, but there’s no way I’m going to let him mess with me and not retaliate.”

“How about a truce? I’ll convince him to leave you alone as long as you promise to do the same with him.”

“Maybe.”

“Fucking maybe?” He glared at me and sat on the bed with a thud. “Are you serious right now?”

I chewed on the corner of my mouth, remembering what I had said to him the first time he questioned my sincerity. “As a fucking heart attack, Stone.”

He stood from the bed and lifted the wooden desk chair from the floor.

“What are you doing?”

“Barricading the door in case we’re sleeping when Mordicus arrives.”

I started to ask him if that was really needed, but I was more than aware of the answer. A truce was never really on the table when it came to Mordy, even I knew that. It was incredibly hard to stand by your word when you had impulse control issues, and Mordy without question did. Well, I thought he did. In reality, I only saw the parts he showed me. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t just a little bit curious to find out what he kept hidden from the world given the pieces he let people see.

“Good idea.”

“What should we do until then? Do you want to take a nap?”

“You know what I would love?”

“Hmm?”

“A bath, a long warm bath.”

“That can be arranged, Bird. It just so happens there’s a huge clawfoot tub behind this door,” he announced after swinging open one of the doors in the room.

“Awesome!” I leapt off the bed as soon as the words left my mouth, stopping right inside the door. “Are you coming?” I smiled shyly, not sure if the nervousness I felt was from the excitement of him possibly agreeing or the fear of rejection.

“You don’t have to ask me twice,” Stone growled in a deep voice.
