Leo
Itried to hide the deep breath I sucked in as we stepped through the front door of the doctor’s office. It was hard to admit that I was more nervous about this appointment than I had ever been meeting with men considered dangerous criminals.
I slowed and hung back as Cadence approached the receptionist. The office was painted a pale blue with pictures of women holding babies all over the walls. Yellow couches lined the edges of the room, one corner dedicated to a small play area where a toddler sat chewing on a toy train as his heavily pregnant mother watched from nearby. Two other women were clearly waiting their own turn with the doctor, but there wasn’t a grown male in sight.
Plucking at my cuffs, I stepped forward when Cadence glanced back toward me. The corners of her mouth twitched as she fought a smile, casting her gaze around the room before those chocolate depths landed back on me. I put on my best cocky smirk, wrapping an arm around her waist to pull her against me.
“Are you okay?”
I raised a brow at her murmured question.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
She returned my raised brow, pointedly looking around again before staring up at me.
“Oh, I don’t know. It’s only a room full of pregnant women, but you looked like you saw a ghost.”
I couldn’t stop the low chuckle that rolled from my chest, but her attention was pulled back to the receptionist before I could respond. Cadence was handed a clipboard with a stack of papers to fill out, so I bit my tongue as we found an empty couch and she bowed her head over them.
It took a few minutes for her to make her way through the questions, then silently return the papers to the receptionist. She didn't seem to want to talk, and I knew she had to be as nervous as I was, so I was content to simply sit by her side as we waited.
The other three women were called into the back one at a time. Cadence had insisted we arrive before her appointment time so she had time to complete the paperwork, but it left us waiting for a while. Eventually the door to the back opened again.
