Huffing another deep breath, I threw an arm over my eyes while my other hand gripped my aching cock. I missed the way things had been before the shootout at the club, but there was also a guilty relief at not having time to really talk to Cadence. Every time I saw my father, I was given alook. I knew he was waiting for me to make a decision and bring Cadence into our fold so she could be protected, or to let her go, but I didn’t like the consequences of either choice. She’d be unhappy either way.

Groaning, I pushed the thoughts away, letting sleep claim me.

When I woke there were still no messages or calls from Cadence. I was in the middle of typing one to her when my phone rang, my father’s office number flashing at me.

“Hello?”

“Meeting. Now.”

He hung up before I could even open my mouth. Growling under my breath, I slid from the bed and dressed, running a hand through my hair and hoping it was good enough. When my father saidNow, it meantimmediately. Every second’s delay would only make his mood worse, and from the tone of those two words, it was bad enough already.

The drive to the office was thankfully short, but when I walked in, Jeremiah was already there, and my father gestured impatiently for me to sit.

“Where are you on getting information about who is behind this?”

My father’s eyes were locked on me, and I had no choice but to deliver bad news.

“Somehow, whoever it is has managed to keep things quiet. The few hints my guy found haven’t panned out or aren’t enough to go off. We aren’t any farther than where we began.”

I looked around again to be sure I hadn’t missed anything when I walked in.

“Is Christos coming?”

My father’s face darkened, and I knew I wasn’t going to like what I was about to hear.

“No, because he was hit last night outside the warehouse. He stumbled in barely keeping his guts from spilling out the holes put in him, and the other three with him weren’t even that lucky. Now, damn it, this has to end!”

My father’s hands slamming down on his desk jerked me out of the shock I’d fallen into. My fists clenched and I drew in a deep breath to battle the rage that wanted to rush through me. We needed clear heads to get this figured out and taken care of.

My father seemed to do the same, rolling his neck to release the tension in his shoulders as he turned his attention to Jeremiah.

“Was anything taken?”

Jeremiah glanced down at the phone in his hand before responding.

“Boys say the main warehouse wasn’t touched, but the back room…”

He hesitated, ducking his head before delivering the bad news.

“It wasn’t empty, but it looks like they took about half the product.”

I watched my father’s hands curl, his lip twitching like he wanted to snarl as a vein throbbed in his forehead. My father had always seemed so formidable, it wasn’t until then that I realized he was getting old. The lines on his face were deep, the years and tough decisions etched into his flesh.

“The men?”

I heard Jeremiah’s swallow before he gave a short nod.

“Casings cleaned up, wounds disguised, accident staged and reported. I need to get back to handle the questions that will come.”

My father nodded and flicked his fingers, allowing Jeremiah to escape. I didn’t envy Jeremiah’s position since he’d be facing the official investigation of a workplace incident. Not that we had reason to worry since we had men in the right positions to keep things swept under the rug, but it still sucked to be the front man dealing with it.

My father was silent for a few moments after Jeremiah left the room, staring down at his hands.

“We need all the men on the street. I know they’ve been doing patrols, but we need to up them around all our assets. I’m making your mother close her shop and stay home until we get this straightened out, and I’ve doubled the guard on the property.”

I nodded when my father’s head rose, and we locked eyes.

“I don’t care what you have to do to find out who’s behind this. I’m relying on you to be point on this. Whatever it takes. You don’t get me answers by Friday, we’re hitting them all.”
