“Great.” Tina wraps her arm around mine. “What did the controlling man tell you?”

“Nothing. We need to be back in a few hours. You are still coming to dinner, right?”

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” We go outside where two Range Rovers and five men are standing.

“What is this?” I turn to Marco.

“Per Mr. Manarch’s orders.” He leads us to the first one and opens the door.

“I won’t stand for this.” I get my phone from my bag as we enter the SUV.

“Can I say something?” Tina asks, making me look at her.

“Always.”

“It doesn’t matter if you call. Things are tense with the family. You know they have been working with the devil’s family.” I look at her confused. “I guess he hasn’t told you. My uncle has brokered a deal where Manarch’s have to work alongside the Irish. There have been a few fights. He probably is just being dramatic with the extra security.” We slide in.

“Why didn’t he tell me?” I ask, putting my phone away. The SUV pulls out.

“Probably not to worry you.”

“I just wish he wouldn’t keep things from me.”

“The Manarch men aren’t exactly known for sharing anything. I’m sure you have learned by now. Don’t be hard on him. He loves you. He just wants you to be safe.” She has a point.

“I guess.” I sigh. She looks at me. “What?”

“What was that sigh for?”

“Nothing.”

“Now you have to spill it.”

“I wish he would trust me with his problems. At least talk to me. We are getting married. He keeps me inside a bubble. Like I am a porcelain doll who is going to break.”

“Have you told him how you feel?”

“I don’t want to push him away. You know how he is. I figured he would eventually tell me what is happening. But enough about Viktor and me. What are you shopping for?”

This is all it takes for her to start talking. I don’t want to talk about Viktor and me. It will remind me I feel like he doesn’t trust me with what is going on. It’s hard not to see that I am in the center of all his problems with his father. He might not say it but I know him choosing me won’t end well.

“We are here!” Tina says, clapping.

“You get excited about the most insane things.”

“It’s the best thing ever, shop ‘til you drop.” We laugh.

For the next few hours, we go through more stores than I could ever want. But I have to give it to her. It has been fun. People stare when they see the huge six men following us. I had to convince Marco to have some of them stay outside the stores. They attract too much attention. Tina comes out of every store with a handful of bags. I don’t know how she does it. Maybe I am too conscious of money.

“Come on, you have to get something here.”

“I don’t need anything.”

“Shopping isn’t about need. It’s about seeing things you like and buying them. I know, let’s look for a hot dress for tonight.”

“You realize it’s a family dinner.”

“Yes, but then you will be his dessert.”
