I could say something but what is the point? Why waste time with her? Soon this nightmare will be over. The DNA test will prove the child Fiona is carrying isn’t mine. There will be no reason for me to stay married to Fiona. I can focus on finding Ava. I made a mistake by not telling her the truth. I have to make things right and the first step will be proving I am not the father of Fiona’s child.

Chapter Eleven

Ava

I am rushing to work. I can’t believe I overslept again. I read that the second trimester is supposed to be better, but someone lied. Sleeping has become a challenge. I either have to pee every hour, or thoughts of Viktor keep me up at night. I rush to the bus stop hoping to make it on time to work. But it’s fifteen minutes before the bus comes. I get in, and it’s crowded. I try to find somewhere to sit, but there isn’t a seat available.Of course, this is NYC, so no one offers. It’s in moments like these I wish Viktor were here. Finally, the bus arrives at my stop. I speed walk from the bus stop. By the time I make it to the store, I am so out of breath. Maddie is already inside with the lights on.

“Did you run here?” She teases as I walk in.

“No, well, from the bus stop. Sorry I am late.”

“You are only ten minutes late. Take a breath.” She smiles.

“I swear this baby’s mission is to keep me awake at night. Then in the morning, I don’t want to get up.” I set my bag behind the counter.

“Wait until you are waking every few hours for a feeding.” She teases.

“Good thing I have time to prepare myself for that.”

I told Maddie a couple of weeks ago about the pregnancy. Well, she figured it out. I guess running to the bathroom to puke or peeing every twenty minutes gave me up. I am happy she knows. I have enough on my plate. I don’t need the stress of hiding that I’m pregnant. It’s supposed to be slow today. These days I rejoice in the boring. This last year was filled with more than enough drama. Now I’m perfectly content with the life unfolding in front of me. No Manarchs and away from my dad’s gambling. I finally have achieved some sort of peace, and I would like to keep it.

It’s been a few hours of cleaning the boutique and switching the old collections with new ones. It’s my happy place. I get to lose myself in the task. I think Maddie secretly gives me that job because she knows I love it. It makes the day fly. But the truth is I don’t think about anything other than the task. At least while I am at work.

It’s hard not talking to Viktor. Granted, it is my choice, but it has been one of the hardest decisions I have made in a long time if ever. Holding on to the notion of what could have been isn’t going to change anything. He is married. I have to move on. I need to focus on my baby and not Viktor.

“Ava,” I hear Maddie call.

“Hey.”

“Are you ok?” She asks with concern.

“Yes, why?” I ask curiously.

“I’ve been trying to get your attention. You would tell me if something isn’t, right?”

“Of course.”

“Good. I was asking if you wanted something from the diner.”

“What time is it?”

“Lunchtime.”

“Wow, where has the time gone?” We laugh.“Fries and a milkshake will be great.” I start to walk to the counter for my bag.

“You better not be going for money,” she teases.“What kind of milkshake do you want?” I smile.

“Chocolate, please.”

“Anything else?”

“No, thank you.”

“I’ll be back quick,” she says, already at the door.

“No rush. It’s not like we are busy.” I look around the boutique.

“Don’t be a smartass.” I laugh.
