“Children are such a blessing.”

“Do you have any?”

“No, I haven't been lucky enough to meet the One.”

“I’m sure she is out there waiting for you.”

“I bet she is closer than I think.” I don’t want to read too much into his words but the way he says it feels like there is more to it. Maybe it's just me since I haven't been around another man since Viktor. I’m sure he is just being friendly. But I don’t want him to get the wrong idea.

“Max,” I start but he talks.

“Sorry Ava, I did not mean to make you uncomfortable and I am sure your significant other would not take kindly to me being overly friendly.

“It’s ok. I just don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I am not seeing anyone and not looking to.

“Oh, you are not with your baby’s father?” He says looking at my belly.

“No. But enough about me. Tell me about your last trip.” I say not wanting to talk about Viktor. I don’t really know Max and talking about Viktor is to personal.

We spend the next hour eating and talking about fashion. My two favorite things. As time passes, I realize I haven’t thought of Viktor. Could it be possible to have a life without him if I give myself a chance? I don’t mean with Max, but a life with just my son and me? Maybe I can give my son a different. I know he is the heir but I could leave the state and start fresh.

“Ready?” Max asks.

“Did she bring the check?”

“I took care of it.”

“Max, you didn’t have to do that.”

“It was my pleasure.”

“Thank you,” I say as I stand.

“Maybe we can do it again.” I smile but don’t say anything. I don’t want to lead him on if he is flirting. He smiles as we make it to the door. He opens it.“After you.”

“Thanks.”

I have to admit I like that I agreed to have lunch with Max. He is so down to earth and easy to talk with. Today has turned out to be a perfect day.

Chapter Twenty Three

Ava

“How are you feeling today?” Lisa asks.

“Tired as usual.” We smile.

“What are you doing today?”

“Running some errands. Did you need anything?”

“Not really. Just checking in.” She smiles.

“Thank you for being such an amazing friend. I don’t know how I would have survived all this time without you.” I touch my swollen belly.

“I’m grateful for you. You are a great friend to me as well.” Her eyes water.

“Don’t cry, or I’ll start.” We laugh.“I think I’ll cook tonight. Maybe we can watch a chick flick.”
