“Anytime. Let me park. I’ll walk you up.”

“I’m fine.” I see the SUV and Marco leaning against it. I know I am safe.

“Are you sure?”

“Of course I am.” I give him a quick kiss on the cheek and get out.

I look across the street and shake my head at Marco, who is looking my way with a smirk. I take my keys out and open the building’s front door as Max drives away. I smile and push the door open. Inside it is unusually quiet. I can hear every step I take. I go to the mailbox to check for mail. Nothing. I walk to the stairs. A few steps up, I see a man running down at full speed straight at me. If I stay in my position, we will collide. I take a step to the side and stop to let him pass. He corrects his course to beeline me again. Before I can react, he pushes me back. Even though I am only a few steps from the ground floor, I lose my balance and fall on my back.

“You should be more canny,” the man shouts. He kicks me. I try to get into a fetal position to protect my son.“Yer lookin’a bit peely wally. It’s a dreich day for you.” He laughs as he leaves.

I try to stand, but I can’t. The man took my bag so I couldn’t call anyone. I do the next best thing.

“Help, someone, please help,” I yell, hoping someone will hear me.

Chapter Twenty Seven

Viktor

“I just spoke to the fucking guy, and nothing happened to her. She has more lives than a cat.” I hear Fiona in the kitchen talking with someone.

“Sweetheart, you need to stop. You are risking someone discovering your secret. You need to leave that girl alone. She already told you she isn’t going to tell Viktor. There is no reason to worry. If she hasn’t told him by now, I doubt she will.” I stand closer to hear the conversation. Who is Fiona talking about?

“I don’t trust her. I don’t believe her mom. I can’t risk it. I have to get rid of her. As long as she lives, she is a threat. Under no circumstances am I going to allow Viktor to find out Ava is pregnant with his child.”

“You need to calm down, sweetheart. This stress isn’t good for your daughter.”

“What did you just say?” I walk into the kitchen.

“Nothing. What did you hear?” Fiona barely says.

“Is Ava pregnant with my child?” I am a few steps away from Fiona.

“I don’t know what you think you heard, but it was not that. That is preposterous,” Fiona says.

“Do you take me for a fool? I know what I heard.” I turn to leave the kitchen.

“Viktor, stop. Where are you going?” Fiona asks, but I don’t stop. I take out my phone.

“Where are you?” I ask Oliver.

“In the garage. Why?”

“I need Ava’s address.”

“That is not a good idea. You said it yourself. Things are fragile right now. You going to her will tip the scales.”

“She is having my child.” I end the call as I enter the garage. He doesn’t say anything and looks away. He knows Ava is pregnant.

“Who told you?” He finally asks.

“Did you know?” I ask, furious. He goes back to not saying anything.“I asked a question.”

“Yes.”

“And you kept it from me? Fuck you, Oliver. You know how I feel about her. A child changes things. She needs me.”

“I know you don’t want to hear this, but it changes nothing. She is still at risk, probably more now than ever.” I want to grab him by the neck and rip him a new one.
