“You aren’t taking my daughter.” I’m a few feet from her.

“Baby, don’t be like this. We can finally be happy once she is home.” She moves to touch me, and I grab her arm.

“Get the fuck out of my office.”

“You’ll regret this. I swear.”

“Don’t push me, Fiona.” I walk back to my chair.

“Please, baby. I love you.”

“Why do you continue to pester me?”

“That fucking whore and her bastard are gone. We are your family.”

“Tread carefully, Fiona.” She stomps and leaves.

All our arguments end the same. John is working on the divorce but it can’t come soon enough. It would have been already done if it weren’t for Aisling being in the hospital. My focus was Aisling. But he is coming home and there is no sense of staying married to Fiona. Fiona is a spoiled, useless woman. I’ve never seen a woman I’m more disgusted by. She doesn’t care about Aisling, who should be the most important person in her life. Aisling is coming home, and instead of focusing on her, she is focused on making my life a living hell. She might be Aisling’s mother, but she will never be her mom. There is not a bone in her body that will ever sacrifice anything for her daughter. But it doesn’t matter because Aisling has me. Once all this mess is settled, I know she will have Ava too. Because I will bring Ava and my son home. We will finally be the family we are supposed to be.

Chapter Thirty Three

Ava

Time is flying. I can’t believe my due date is around the corner. I am dying to hold my son in my arms. Lately, I find myself thinking of Viktor and what he must be going through. Oliver told me Fiona gave birth shortly after I left. He shared that there were some complications with Viktor’s daughter. I wanted to run to Viktor. Be with him. Comfort him. But I had to remind myself it wasn’t my place. Viktor can take care of himself and his daughter. As I stare out the window, I can’t help the tears.

“What’s wrong?” Max asks, holding out a cup of tea.

“Nothing, just thinking about my son.” He sits beside me.

“Everything will be fine. You’ll see.”

“I hope so.” I look out the window.

“I thought you might want to take a walk. Distract yourself a little.”

“That sounds great. I’ll get my shoes. Meet you at the door.” A walk is exactly what I need. I need to get out of my head. Thinking about Viktor isn’t doing me any good.

?

My walk with Max is exactly what I needed. Something about a clear sky and beautiful sights makes everything better. Our conversation is light which is nice. Before I know we have been walking for almost thirty minutes.

“We probably should head back. You and hippo are probably hungry.” I can’t help but smile and shake my head.

“You might be right.” I say as we make our way back to the cabin.

“That was a really nice walk. Thanks for the suggestion.” I tell Max as we climb the porch steps.

“My pleasure. Do you want to hear something funny?”

“What?” I ask, taking my shoes off.

“Earlier, when I went to get groceries, the owner asked how my wife felt since you weren’t with me.”

“Please tell me you corrected him.” I stand in front of him.

“It was a harmless statement. Didn’t see the point.”

“I’m not your wife, Max. We don’t need people thinking that. I don’t want people getting the wrong idea.”
