Frantic, I feel for the touch buttons. Finally, I hear a click. And then someone opens the door.

“It’s about damn time, Ava.”

I want to scream when I recognize the voice, but before I know it, the man sticks me with a needle, and everything goes black.

Sometime Later…

When I open my eyes, it takes a few minutes for my vision to adjust. I check my surroundings. I’m in a warehouse. It smells like death, and there is no one in sight. I try to move, but my hands are bound. I find that I’m sitting on a mattress on the floor.

“Hello? Anybody here?” My voice echoes around the quiet space. “Ray?” I attempt to stand, but it’s useless. My bindings are too tight. “Hello?” I yell again.

“Stop harping on,” a man to my left demands.

“Who’s there?” I can’t see him. He’s too far away.

“A friend of the family,” he answers a few feet from me before he slowly emerges from the shadows.

He seems familiar. I’ve seen him somewhere, but I can’t place him.

“Why am I here? Do you not know who I am?”

“I’m well aware of who you are, Ava Manarch.”

“Then what do you want? And who are you?” I try to wiggle my hands free without success.

“You’ll only hurt yourself doing that. I’m excellent at restraining people.” A dark laugh escapes him. “These restraints won’t give like the ones Viktor uses when he’s fucking you.”

Who the hell is this man?

“Where is Ray?” I demand, my tone unlike any I’ve used before.

“Ray is dead. There was no need for dead weight.”

“Who are you?” I ask again, my pain for Ray’s family in my words.

“You can call me Junior. I waited hours to take you. You took your time.” He sounds annoyed. “I was sure you’d come out of hiding once I saw Oliver and Viktor leave. You should blame them for being taken. They left you unprotected.” Again, he laughs. “You are probably wondering why you’re here?”

When he moves closer, I swear I’ve seen him before.

“My husband will kill you,” I warn, my tone as low as his hooded eyes.

“Viktor won’t kill me. Not if he knows what is good for him.” The way he says it brings chills to my bones.

He stands in front of me.

“He will—”

“He can’t. He won’t have the balls to do it. Besides, this isn’t about Viktor.” His eyes bounce between mine as he adds, “This is about you.”

“What the hell have I done to you? I don’t even know you.”

“I’m Bobby’s son.”

“Who the hell is Bobby?”

He bends down, grabs my arm, and forces me to my feet. “I’m the man who will run the Manarch Clan once I get rid of Viktor, and you will be my Queen.”
