“He’s her son. I’d rather she find out from me than some random stranger.” Ava brings his blanket higher, a few tears escaping her.

“Oliver will be fine,” I reassure her again before joining her at his bedside.

“He had better be.” She leans into me, taking comfort from my body.

We stand in silence for a few seconds. Ava is probably planning Oliver’s recovery, whereas I’m thinking, “One hitman down. How many more to go?”

ChapterTen

Viktor

Aknock sounds at my home office door while I’m scrutinizing the information Angus gathered about Ava and Oliver’s shooter. I still need to verify that Fiona hired the hitman, not Cillian or my father. Either of them could have easily used her to cover their tracks. There are still too many unknowns, and I hate it. It’s unsettling.

Also, despite being out for a few hours, Oliver hasn’t woken, which puts me even more on edge.

“Can we come in?” Ava asks after peeking her head around the corner.

I smile when I spot Aisling in her arms.

“Always.” I stand to greet them.

“Dadda,” Aisling calls out the instant she spots me.

“Someone has been asking for you,” Ava announces, her smile uncontained but worry still in her eyes.

“Come here, princess.” I scoop Aisling out of Ava’s arms and pull her in close.

“Dadda,” she murmurs again before nuzzling into my chest.

“How are you holding up?” Ava asks after squeezing my arm.

“Holding,” I say. “I’m proud of you.”

She looks at me curiously. “Why is that?”

“You held your own. You didn’t panic and did exactly what I needed without me giving instructions.”

Her smile makes the dark and dreary day seem nowhere as haunting. “This is our family, and I’ll doanythingto keep us together.”

I tug her in before pressing my lips to the side of her head. My two beautiful ladies, but where’s the other man of the house?”

“Taking a nap like he’s supposed to.” Ava tickles Aisling’s tummy. “His sister didn’t want to cooperate.”

“She’ll be feisty and set in her ways... just like her mother.”

I chuckle when Ava ribs me with her elbow before she pulls away from me. “Can you keep her occupied for a little bit? I want to check on Oliver.”

“Let’s go together.”

She wants to object but doesn’t. While smiling about her submissiveness, I let her lead the way. As we reach the door, the nurse exits. She looks rattled.

“Is there something wrong?” Ava asks, her tone high with panic.

“Not at all.” She shifts her eyes to the bedroom she’s fleeing. “He’s awake but refusing to let me examine him.”

“And you didn’t call me?” Ava’s anger reaches a ten in an instant. “I want you gone. See yourself out.”

“I’m sorry, Ma’am—”
