All these concessions have put her at risk.

Oliver breaks the silence as we approach an SUV. “I’ll drive.”

“Fine,” I agree as Angus gets in too.

“It’ll take a few hours,” Oliver announces as he fires up the ignition and commences our drive.

“Just fucking drive, Oliver.”

If he’s going to add anything, he changes his mind. His teeth grit before he switches on the radio to fill the silence. I don’t want to listen to techno crap, but what is the alternative? I don’t want to talk because then I’d have to admit that I’m sick of all these horrible things that happen because I’m a Manarch.

“I swear if he hurts Ava, I will kill him,” I finally announce over the music.

“You and me both,” Oliver adds as his grip on the steering wheel tightens.

I call my mother and instruct her to go to the mansion. Even though Ray and Beiste are there, I need my mother to watch the kids and make sure they’re fine.

During the long drive, I try not to think about what Max might be doing to Ava, but it’s fucking impossible.

Max has sealed his fate. He will be dead by the end of the day.

I try to call Ava again, but it goes to voicemail. I don’t want to alert Max that I’m coming for her, so I don’t leave a message.

From time to time, Angus checks the tracker location to ensure Ava is still at the cabin. And, although it kills me to admit it, I couldn’t be more grateful for Oliver’s anal retentiveness when it comes to Ava’s safety.

If it weren’t for him, we might have never known where Max took her.

A few hours later…

“We’re about five minutes out. The cabin is at the top of the hill above. I think we shouldn’t drive all the way,” Oliver says, breaking the silence as he turns down the radio. “Who knows what Max’s state of mind is.”

“Park as close as you can,” I order him, my rapid heart rate heard in my words.

He parks, and before he can switch off the engine, I throw open my door and head for the cabin. We don’t spot any other cabins during our hike up the hill. This place is isolated, which is great for doing whatever you want to someone without alerting anyone.

My rage grows with every step I take. “I’m putting a bullet in his head.”

Oliver looks at me. “There’s only one way in. How do you want to play it?”

“Break down the door.”

“Aye,” Angus agrees from behind me.

We’re less than a hundred yards from the cabin. When we reach it, I take out my gun and kick the door open. As soon as we’re in, I hear Ava’s voice. I signal for Angus and Oliver to clear the cabin while I follow Ava’s voice.

“Let me out, Max!” she shouts.

“You will see I’m doing this for your own good,” he replies.

“Viktor isn’t hurting me. Who told you that?” I hear as I move closer.

“Someone who loves you and wants to see you happy.”

When Oliver and Angus catch up, I signal them to cover me.

We turn a final corner before we reach them.
