As she remains stubborn, the darkness in Fiona’s eyes grows darker. They’re filled with anger. She’s certifiably crazy, but I never imagined her threatening to harm Aisling. Aisling is her flesh and blood.

In under a second, Fiona loses all humanity. Her eyes appear dead as she points a gun at Aisling. She shoots the vase beside me. She’s out for my blood and doesn’t care if Aisling gets caught in the crossfire.

Before another thought crosses my mind, I push Aisling to the floor, making her cry. Just as Aisling is out of my hands, glass shatters to my right, and my stomach starts to burn. I peer at the window, confused. I see a person’s silhouette but can’t make out any details.

I snap my eyes to Fiona, who appears as confused as me. As the burning sensation grows, I glance down at my stomach. Blood stains my white robe.

Before I can speak, I fall forward, and everything goes black.

Fiona McIntyre has finally gotten her wish.

I am dead.

ChapterThree

Viktor

A few minutes earlier…

Exactly an hour later, there’s a knock at the door. Oliver and I talked business while Niko slept, but he woke up a few minutes ago. Oliver opens the door, and Brenda enters, smiling sweetly. She seems to have a thing for him—not that he’s noticed.

“Hi, Mr. Manarch. Ava asked me to come by to see if you need anything.”

“We’re fine,” I assure her.

“I can come back in thirty minutes to dress Niko if you’d like?” As the last word leaves her mouth, I hear a gunshot.

“Take Niko. Get in the bathtub and don’t move,” I order her. Oliver is already out the door.

“Okay.” She grabs Niko and runs to the bathroom.

I snatch up my gun and run out of the suite behind Oliver. There’s a commotion outside Ava’s suite, and men are charging toward it. As I do the same, I panic that my girls are hurt or worse.

Oliver is almost inside the suite when I arrive. Inside, Ava lays on the floor.

“What the fuck is going on in here? Ava!”

“She’s alive but losing a lot of blood,” one of my men says.

Ava’s white robe is stained with blood. One of the men is holding Aisling, who is crying hysterically, but thankfully looks unharmed.

I scan the suite. Glass is everywhere, and the window beside Ava is shattered. I spy Fiona laying on the floor to my left. Her eyes are open, and she’s coughing blood.

As I stand over her bloody body, I snarl, “I warned you.” Without remorse, I pull the trigger and shoot her between the eyebrows. “Oliver, take Aisling to Brenda and stay with them,” I order.

“Call me as soon as you know where Ava is going.” He glances at Ava and takes a deep breath. Worry is written all over his face. He’s wondering the same thing I am—is Ava dead? My anger makes me want to shoot Fiona again, even though she’s already dead.

As I move toward a motionless Ava, the panic inside me grows. “Has someone called nine-one-one?”

“Marco had paramedics on standby in case something happened today. They should be here any second,” someone remarks.

I kneel next to Ava. My hands are shaking as I check her pulse. It’s weak, but she’s alive. I let out the breath I seem to have been holding forever. “How the fuck did Fiona get in here?” I bark, staring angrily around the room.

“She posed as a maid, sir,” replies one man, as if this is an excuse I will accept.

“Get the fuck out,” I order the man beside Ava.

As the guard races from the suite before he can receive the same punishment as Fiona, Marco enters with paramedics in tow. “Mr. Manarch, you need to move.”
