His expression is surprised, but he turns and leaves without protest. I don’t really know what I’m doing or why I want to speak with them, but I certainly won’t sit around and do nothing just because that’s what Viktor wants.

When I enter Viktor’s office, his scent is overwhelming. When he isn’t home, and I’m missing him, I sometimes come to his office to feel his presence. Except this visit isn’t about him. This is business. If Viktor thinks he can keep me from helping find our son, he truly doesn’t know me.

I march to his desk and turn on his computer. A few weeks ago, he gave me his login credentials.

As the computer reboots, Angus and Marco enter.

“Mrs. Manarch, you wanted to see us?” Marco asks.

“Yes. I know Viktor put in place a contingency plan in the event something ever happened to him,” I say.

“That’s correct,” Marco agrees, and Angus eyes me curiously.

“I want you to have it on standby in case I need you to take Aisling.”

“The plan is intended for youandthe children, Ma’am,” Marco announces.

“Have the plan ready. Anything you need, ask Angus. Also, don’t share anything with anyone. Not until we know for sure how Niko was taken.”

“Of course. Anything else?” Marco asks.

“That will be all.”

Marco takes his cue and leaves.

He’s only just closed the door of Viktor’s office when Angus asks, “What are you planning, Ava?”

“I’m planning for the worst. We both know getting Niko back won’t be straightforward. Grace took him. It’s the only logical explanation.” I murmur more to myself than him.

“Yes. That’s why Viktor and Oliver went to her place.”

“She won’t be there, and they won’t find anything. Women aren’t like men. She’s working for Cillian or Dougal. Those two aren’t stupid enough to let her go home with my son. I didn’t. This is why I want to review everything. Her entire life history. There has to be something we’re missing.” He smiles at me again. “What?”

“You were born to be a Queen.”

I scoff at him. “I’m not a Queen. I am a mother searching for her son.”

“You’re more than that. You’re a Manarch. People fear Viktor, but I’m afraid they have it all wrong. You’re the one they should fear.” He must realize that now is not the time to debate power because he adds, “Tell me what you want me to do.”

“Get the hacker and have him go through Grace’s life, no stone unturned. I only want men you can personally vouch for inside the house. Grace wasn’t working alone. Someone helped her leave.”

“We came to the same conclusion before Viktor and Oliver left. It’s why I stayed behind.”

“Then let’s get working. There’s no time to waste.”

Viktor might be the heir of the Manarch Clan and as ruthless as they come, but nothing compares to how far I’m willing to go for my son. This time around, I’ll be calling the shots. I will never be in a position where I can’t defend myself or my family.

“Ava.” When I look up at Angus, he promises, “We will find him.”

“I don’t doubt it. This city won’t sleep until I have him safely in my arms.”

ChapterTwenty

Ava

We spend an hour combing through Grace’s life and don’t learn anything. Viktor called. He and Oliver are checking out some places Grace frequents. I considered reading them the riot act for giving me the sedative, but there are more pressing matters than arguing with Viktor. There will be time for that once Niko is home.

I’m positive that finding out Grace’s real identity is the key to finding Niko. There must be something we’re missing.
