I take Niko from her and start running. If Cillian doesn’t already know Ava and Niko have escaped, he will soon. Once they see Grace’s body on the floor, Cillian will realize Oliver is a distraction.

I try to quiet Niko’s screams, but he’s crying hysterically.

“Stop,” Ava orders. When I do, she orders, “Give him to me. It’s okay, baby.” She soothes him as only a mother can. “Mommy and Daddy are here.” It takes her only seconds to calm him down enough to keep our location concealed.

“You’re so good with him.”

She smiles like we’re not in the middle of a war. “So are you.”

I’d give anything to extend her smile, but now isn’t the time. “We have to go.”

This time when we move away, we walk instead of running. Hopefully, we won’t attract attention now that Niko isn’t crying.

“It should be just ahead,” I tell Ava as we push through some thick shrubs.

“Thank you for coming for us.” There’s relief in Ava’s voice.

“I’ll always come for you and our kids.”

We stop at the spot Oliver and I agreed on. He isn’t here, which is not good. Right as I’m about to call him, I see his SUV.

He skids to a stop right next to us. “Get in.” Oliver shifts his wide eyes to Ava when we slip into the SUV. “Stay low with Niko.”

Gunshots ring in the air as we speed off. The SUV is bulletproof, but if they corner us or force us to crash, I doubt we will survive.

When the shots get closer, I stare at Ava through the mirror. She is calm, focused on soothing our son.

How the hell did I get so lucky?

My thoughts seem stupid when Oliver swerves to the right to avoid a car from cutting us off. He misses colliding with them by a hair, but I don’t like our odds.

I mentally fist-bump the air when I spot headlights coming straight toward us.

My men have made it.

Oliver speeds through the gap my men have created. Once on the other side, we all let out a breath of relief. But Oliver doesn’t slow down. He continues at a breakneck speed.

Before I know it, we pull into the mansion. We’re barely through the gates when Angus opens Ava’s door.

“Good to see you, Ava,” he greets before taking Niko from her.

Angus is the only man who addresses her by her given name who isn’t family .

“It sure is,” she tells him.

She takes Niko back once she’s out of the SUV before she enters our house.

“We have to talk,” I voice, following behind her.

“I’m sure we do. But not now. I want to give our son a bath and check on our daughter.”

“Ava—”

“Just go with her,” Oliver suggests, giving me a nudge of encouragement.

I want to reprimand him, but I don’t have the energy to argue.

For the next hour, Ava and I bathe Niko. We don’t talk. We glance at each other from time to time, but her focus is predominately on Niko.
