After Niko’s bath, she goes to Aisling’s bedroom to check on her.

“It’s so good to see you three,” my mother greets, standing from her chair.

“You’ve no idea.” Ava strolls over to her. “Thanks for staying with Aisling.”

“You never have to thank me. It was my pleasure. Besides, where else would I have gone? I was needed here.”

“I don’t want to keep you here if you need to go.”

My mother shoos off her worry with a pfft. “I’m staying.”

“Good, since I already made arrangements. The bedroom at the end of the floor is ready for you,” Ava announces, smiling.

“Guess she planned it all,” I say in awe of Ava.

“Come and get me if you need me. It’s so good to see you, my sweet boy.” My mother kisses Niko’s head before tickling his stomach. “I’m grateful you found them,” she tells me.

“Me too.”

When she leaves us, Ava sits on the rocker to feed Niko. We quietly sit as she feeds him, ignoring her unshed tears.

It’s another twenty minutes before she lays Niko in his crib. Over the next several minutes, she watches both of our kids. I stand behind her before throwing my arms around her.

After a few minutes, she spins to face me. “We should go.” She whispers. “Let me have your cell.”

Once outside the kid’s bedroom, I give it to her without question. She dials someone before pushing the phone to her ear. “Angus, I want two men upstairs in front of Aisling’s bedroom. Both kids are inside. I also want at least two men standing outside the mansion near Aisling’s bedroom window. Thanks.”

She hands me my cell before she heads for our bedroom.

“I’m in awe of you, Mrs. Manarch.”

When she continues for the bathroom, I close the door and follow her inside.

“Ava?”

She doesn’t speak. She simply turns the shower on and stares at the water until the first tear escapes her.

She almost falls to her knees, but I catch her.

“Niko is safe because of you. You’re safe,” I promise as she cries in my arms.

“Cillian needs to die. He won’t stop. He wants blood.”

“I know,” I agree with a quick head bob.

She peers up at me, her heartbreak all over her face. “This canneverhappen again.”

“I know,” I reassure her.

This will never happen again.

I’ll put my life on it.

ChapterTwenty-Three

Ava

It’s been almost a week since Viktor saved Niko and me. Things have been tense around the house. Everyone else is waiting for Cillian to attack. I, on the other hand, have been training. I’m pushing myself to learn as much as I can.
