“Okay,” she finally says.

“I love you, Mom.”

“I love you, too.”

If I allow her time to think, my mother will find a million reasons she’s safe in her home. But I know better.

I dial Viktor, but he doesn’t answer, so I call Ava.

“Hi. Is everything okay?” she asks before I can get a word in.

“Yeah,” I lie. “Where is Viktor?”

“He’s taking a shower. He should be out any minute. Did you want something?”

“Tell him I’m implementing Code Black.”

“What does that mean?”

“Pack a bag for you and the kids. Tell Viktor to call me the moment he is out of the shower.”

“Oliver—”

“I have to go, Ava. Talk to you later.”

I’m avoiding her questions.

“Did you get a hold of everyone?” Ray asks, approaching me.

“Yes. How are things here?”

“The arsenal is ready. The safe houses and guards are in place. The phone tree has been activated.” He stares at his watch. “We’re cutting it close, but everyone should be in place in two hours.”

“Any updates?”

“No. I had a few men check the docks and warehouse. It’s like the end of times… a ghost town. I have a bad feeling about this.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose. “I know exactly what you mean. Bad feelings seem to be all I have lately,” I mutter, more to myself than the others.

“We need all this shit to end,” Ray adds.

“That we do.” When I spot Angus running toward us, I take my gun out.

Time is up.

“What is it?”

“They’ve breached the mansion.”

“Fuck.” I dial Ava and Viktor, but neither of them answers. “Have you heard from Viktor or Ava?”

“Apparently, it’s chaos.”

“Let’s move,” I order, talking through my heart, which is now in my throat.

“You can’t,” Angus says.

He stands firm in front of me, blocking me from taking a step forward.
