Inside Eros, Angus is talking with Ray.

“Good. You’re here,” Ray says, his voice worried.

“What’s happening?” I ask.

“It’s what isnothappening that’s the problem,” Ray replies.

I look at Angus.

“There’s radio silence. No Irish in sight. Your father’s men have thinned out,” Angus advises.

I know what they’re speculating, but I want to be wrong.

So, I ask, “What are you both deducing?”

“There have been no movements anywhere. They’re going to attack, and I’m sure it will be in a matter of hours,” Ray answers.

“Are we ready for an attack?” I ask, the thud of my heart heard in my tone.

“Aye,” Angus answers.

“Let’s call a Code Black. I’d rather be safe than sorry. All-hands-on-deck.”

“We will get the ball rolling,” Ray announces.

I had hoped we wouldn’t have to run a Code Black. I devised the response when the Clan officially divided a few months back. Every woman and child in the Clan will be moved to a safe house as far away from the fight as possible. The Irish don’t care about gender or age like we do. Their priority is to win at any cost. I take out my cell and dial Marco.

“What’s up, Oliver?” he greets me.

“I’m implementing Code Black. The Irish have disappeared.”

He swallows before replying, “I’ll text you when everything is in place.”

“Thanks. Call me if you need anything.”

“I will. Call if anything changes.”

I dial my mother.

“Hi, sweetheart, how are you?”

“I’m good, Mom. Where are you?”

“Home. Where else would I be?” Her laugh loosens the knot in my stomach.

“Have you seen Dad today?”

“As a matter of fact, I haven’t. Did you need to speak with him? I’m sure if you call him, he’ll answer.”

I interrupt. “Mom, Jimmy is coming to get you. Pack a bag. He should be there in ten minutes.”

“What is going on, Oliver?” There’s concern in her voice.

“I don’t know, and that’s the problem. I’m not sure if you’re safe at home.”

She takes a deep breath. “Your father would never hurt me.” She is attempting to sound certain, but her voice shakes.

“I would rather not take the chance. Besides, it’s not just Dad I’m worried about. Viktor and I want you safe. Jimmy will be there in ten minutes.”
