“Good, well, I hope you had a good breakfast. We may work a little past lunch.”

I did manage to do that, actually. After waking, I wandered down to the small cafeteria situated near the apartment complex and grabbed a breakfast burrito and a glass of orange juice. Maybe snuck in a bagel too. And stuffed a box of cereal in my pocket to munch on later.

I’m a big boy. I need to feed myself, or I feel like I’m going to wither away. All those years of football made me into an eating machine. I need at least a few thousand calories a day so I don’t die. And this place feeds us well. If I’m not careful, I’m going to put on some pounds.

When we finally arrive at the outdoor bar on the main island, my eyes swivel around the large space. It’s a bunch of bungalows with the open layout of the bar in the middle, the blue ocean lapping gently at the pier. It’s so tranquil, so beautiful.

What would it be like to live here permanently?

I shield my eyes from the sun and turn in a semi-circle when my eyes land on him. Oh god.

Oh my fucking god.

So much for never seeing him again.

Holden is behind the bar, leaning against the bar top, his lips turned up in a sensual smile while he flirts with another guy. He discreetly hands the man something who then tucks it away in his pocket.

What did he just give him? His phone number? Drugs? Condoms?

Did he fuck this other guy in the bathroom on his break? I can see him doing that, riding that guy’s dick when no one was looking. It’s what he did with me.

I feel my jaw clench, and I fist my hands tightly.

Doesn’t matter. That was a…fluke. It was weird and it won’t happen again. I’m not jealous, just…I’m not jealous.

Holden’s eyes swing toward where I’m standing and when they settle on me, he bites down on his bottom lip and winks.

My entire body flames, and Devon scoffs next to me, a toolbox in his hand.

“Fuck’s sake. Warned ya and ya still did it anyways,” he murmurs, his Southern accent coming out to play.

My cheeks heat, and I feel like it’s gotten a hundred degrees hotter out here. Holden pushes himself upright and his hair is wavy and sun-kissed, almost like he spent the morning riding the waves. He’s wearing a loose tank top. I can’t see that ass though. No, that’s behind the bar.

Wish he’d just give me a peek, just for a second so I could remember what it looks like, what it felt like.

“Hey, Devon,” Holden says, and Devon snorts.

“Fuck off, asshole. You seducing my workers? You’re no good. I know it.”

Holden’s smile only widens. “You’d miss me if I were gone.”

“I surely wouldn’t,” Devon says and then knocks me lightly on the arm. “Peel your eyes away, son, and come help me over here.”

I do as he says, finding it harder than I thought to do as I’m told. Not when Holden is standing there looking so…so hot.

But I manage it, helping Devon repair the broken sink in the bathroom and patch the hole in the wall.

“Bunch of rich fucks getting rowdy. Should be madder about it, but it keeps me workin’,” he explains, and I just nod. I peek out the open door at Holden who is wiping down the bar with a rag, still talking far too animatedly with that other guy.

I’m sure they’ve fucked. That guy is looking at Holden like he hung the moon.

“Alright, you did good even with a distraction,” Devon says as he puts all the tools away. I have spackle on my hands, and I move to the sink to wash it off.

I’ve always been good with home maintenance, it’s why I knew this job would be perfect for me. I was patching walls, fixing tractors, and building sheds by the time I was ten. Life on a farm, I guess.

I never knew I’d be using these skills on a tiny island in the Indo-Pacific, but here I am.

The door to the bathroom shuts with a click as Devon leaves, and I stare at myself in the mirror. My cheeks are a little flushed and my hair a little unkempt. The white uniform shirt that he gave me yesterday is a little wrinkled. I should see about making sure the others are hung up so I don’t look so fucking out of place.
