He throws on his shirt and runs a hand through his hair, messing it up further.

“It was fun,” he says and then waves at me, all casual, like no big deal, we didn’t just fuck for the second time. And then he turns on his heel and leaves my apartment.

I can do nothing but just watch him go, confusion filtering through me.

This island is all sorts of fucked up. I don’t belong here.

Maybe I should go home.

The following day after work,I’m sitting under the shade of a palm tree, just lounging on the sand. I can hear the leaves rustling in the wind above me, and I find my eyes closing at the sound. It’s so different here than where I’m from. The sound of the ocean, the soft whispering of the trees, the smell in the air, the exotic noises from the jungle behind me.

A sudden shrill screech has me snapping my head up and there, above me is a small monkey, leering down at me.

Yeah, we don’t have those in South Dakota either.

I should probably glance away because if I continue to make eye contact, don’t they get violent? Hmm, or maybe that’s gorillas. I’m not sure. What if it starts throwing poop at me? I mean, it’s not the worst thing that’s happened to me. I can handle a little shit.

I avert my eyes and glance back out at the water lapping at the shore before turning my gaze back to the monkey once more. He’s significantly closer now, his long arms holding him against the tree trunk.

Fuck, he’s unnerving. Didn’t Devon just warn me about this monkey earlier today?

“Keep your eye out for that lone monkey. He makes off with your shit. Don’t leave your window open.”

Now I was wondering what kind of shit he makes off with.

“Hey!” a voice calls from the path behind me.

I glance back and see Polly approaching with a guy whose name I can’t remember.

“Hey, Chase, what are you up to?” she asks as they come to a stop beside me. I glance up at them and then toward the monkey who is still watching us with those beady eyes. “Ah, you’ve met Bob, I see,” Polly says, and the guy next to her rolls his eyes.

“Didn’t leave your window open, did you?” he asks.

“I don’t think so,” I murmur and then push myself up, trying like hell not to peer up at the wild animal.

“You remember Atlas, right?” Polly asks, and I eye the guy, his short sandy-blond hair, and his big, muscular, tattooed arms. He looks like a college dude-bro.

“Yeah,” I say, even though I don’t. I vaguely remember his face, but his name doesn’t ring a bell.

“Hey,” Atlas says. “How are you liking island life so far?”

I shrug, shoving my hands into my pockets. “It’s different.”

“Yeah, where you from?”

“South Dakota.”

“Ah, I’m from Kansas. Kind of the same, you know?’

I don’t know, but I bob my head like I do. I’ve lived in South Dakota my whole life. I went to the University of South Dakota where I played football. The only time I traveled was for games. God, I am so out of place with these people. I don’t even belong.

“Well, we were just gonna go for a walk along the beach. You wanna come?” Polly asks.

I eye them and then think about the sunscreen Holden gave me. I slathered some on after arriving home a while ago and thought of him the entire time.

I didn’t rub any on my dick, even though, for a second, I was tempted. But I didn’t want my dick to fall off while I was here. I don’t even know if they have an onsite doctor. Do they? They must, right?
