“We don’t know how many more of those creatures they have here,”I roared.

“She won’t attack me. She’s a Paragon, just like me.”

“She’s not under your control. She’s under his. Just like you were.”

Suddenly, she stopped squirming in my grasp and twirled around to glare at me. Tears lay heavily in her once-bright eyes. She shoved me hard into the boulder and showed me her vampire fangs.

“Don’t hold that over my head. I know what he did to me. I lived through it every fucking day for years,”she screamed through the mind link, her words trembling with anger and agony.“And that’s why I need to save her and save Hellana’s baby.”

“Chain Number Thirty-Four back up,” he announced. “And then we’ll move out.”

When Sina lunged forward, I seized her waist again and slapped a hand over her mouth. No fucking way was I about to let her jump out there and get herself killed over a girl and a baby. She was more important to me—to us—than anyone else.

A guard clasped chains around the girl, who licked the blood off her lips. I grasped Sina tighter and sank my nose into the crook of her neck, gently setting my teeth on her mark, hoping that I wouldn’t have to bite her to control her.

Sina struggled harder and harder, almost escaping my grasp. So, I cursed to the gods that I had to do this and slipped my teeth into her neck, growling at her through the mind link to stop. We didn’t have the warriors ready for this.

Slowly, the men cleared out with the young girl and the baby. When they were gone completely, Sina ripped herself away from me—my teeth tearing her skin—and rushed back toward home, thankfully not after the guards.

As soon as we stepped into the pack house, Sina slammed the door and twisted toward me. “We could’ve saved them! We could’ve fucking saved them!” she screamed. “Why did you stop me?! I could’ve taken them all on!”

“You know why I stopped you, Sina,” I growled back.

“Why?!” she shouted, fangs extending. “Do you not believe in me?”

“I believe in you and what you can do, but—”

“But what?!”

“But I’m not going to lose you again! I fucking refuse!”

She broke down in tears, collapsing onto her knees and throwing her head into her hands. “I could’ve saved them. I could’ve fucking saved them. Now, he will take them back to his estate and do what he did to me. He’s going to let grown men rape them, and … and … I should’ve stopped it.”

Sina was trying to blame me for this to take the blame off herself. If she had really wanted to, Sina would’ve thrown me off her and ripped through herfather’sguards one by one. But she knew that it wasn’t a good idea. She had known we wouldn’t win.

We needed more intel.

“If you thought we’d make it out alive, you would’ve ripped yourself out of my hold.”

“Stop it.”

“You know it’s true.”

“Stop it,” she begged. “Please, stop! I can’t …” Another heartbreaking sob. “I c-can’t handle it. I could’ve stopped it. I could’ve stopped it, and I didn’t because … because when I saw his face, all those memories came rushing back. I wanted to kill him, but I know I can’t. He’s done so much to me. So fucking much to me.”

She continued to scream and cry in the middle of the living room floor as Hellana appeared at the back glass door, knocking.

I ran a hand over my face and hurried over to it. “Listen, I can’t talk right now, Hellana.”

“My baby,” she whispered. “I heard that you caught the scent of my baby.”

I sucked in a sharp breath and glanced over at Sina.

“Tell her,” Sina cried harshly. “Tell her.”

“We couldn’t save your baby,” I said.

As much as it hurt me, Sina hurt worse. Her father had struck cold-hearted fear right into her, and I didn’t blame her. I didn’t want her to feel worse about what she had done, especially now that Hellana was here. It wasn’t her fault.
