“I’m not answering any more of your idiotic questions.”

My lips twitched. “I’m right.”

“You are the furthest from the truth.” She seethed. “And you’re no longer welcome here. The Inferno is for demons only, and you’re nothing but a wolf who is up to no good. You’re banned from this place forever.”

“Fucking good. I’m going to find out whatever the fuck he’s up to,” I growled, smacking the drink out of her hand and storming out of The Inferno.

I might not have found the answers that I had come here for, but I had found out enough.

In downtown Durnbone,I stepped into Witch’s Brew to buy more vampire blood and herbs to make my potions. Calder followed me into the small store and toward the back, where the same witch from the other day eyed us.

“You’re back?” she asked, arching a brow and adjusting her black stocking, caught on the corner of her desk. After moving closer to us, she leaned against a table and crossed her arms. “Are you back for more blood and herbs?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t have much left,” she said, walking to the back of the shop and grabbing the last small vial of vampire blood. “Last night, I had a couple of customers come in to buy almost all the vials I had left. Good thing I forgot about this one way in the back.”

“Someone …” I asked, mouth drying. “Someone came in to buy them all?”

She handed me the last vial and held out her hand for money in return. I rummaged through my purse to give her whatever I could find because I wanted to get out of Durnbone as soon as humanly possible.

“A tall, slender human man.”

“No,” I whispered, backing up until I hit Calder’s front. “Gods, please, no.”

I would bet that tall, slender human man also had brown eyes so friendly that anyone would trust him, a smile that could win over anyone, and glasses that amplified his intelligence and attractiveness to others.

“There was something evil lurking within that man,” she said. “Something that none of the customers could see, but I could feel it. A witch can always tell the intentions of others, especially those with murky malice lying within their soul.”

After swallowing hard, I gripped the vial in my hand and grabbed Calder’s bicep with the other. He thanked the witch as I dragged him to the exit of the shop. She had been nicer to me than she had been the other day but … if Dad had been here, I wanted to go home.

We would head to the Halloween party tonight, dressed in costumes so nobody would recognize us, and then I wanted to be locked away in their pack house for good. I didn’t want them to let me out, no matter how hard my heat got or how much … I wanted to help them.

I didn’t want Dad to hurt me ever again.

Once we stepped into the chilly fall air, Calder grabbed my hand in his larger one and gave it a good squeeze. “I told you that we’re going to protect you, no matter what. When we find your dickhead father, I’ll kill—”

“No,” I snapped. But then, because we had shared that one small moment earlier, I looked down at my feet and shook my head. “Look, I’m sorry. I know you want to protect me. I know you want to kill anyone who has hurt me, but you can’t.”

No matter how hard anyone tried, they wouldn’t be able to stop him. The only person who could stop him would be me because I knew everything about him and knew exactly what kind of world he wanted to build. I knew his secrets too.

Calder dropped my hand and gritted his teeth. “Fuck, Sina. Just let me fucking protect you for once. Why the hell don’t you believe in me, inus? You don’t know what your father threw at us when he took you away. You don’t know the hell we had to go through to fucking survive.”

“You don’t know the hell thatIhad to survive!”

My words came out harsher than I’d meant them, but I had so much anger built up inside me from these past four years. I thought I was the only person who’d had it rough when, in reality, my guys were hurting just as bad.

Sighing through my nose, I stopped in the middle of the street and stared up into Calder’s eyes. He had so much hurt and fear and agony built up in his eyes, pain that I had never once stopped to try to heal.

Sure, Calder was fucked in the head a bit. But weren’t we all?

“I’m so—”
