“Whatever it is, it can wait.”

All I wanted to do was bring her to the prison to see what she was truly capable of. She had powers beyond belief. And I wanted to know—I needed to know—her true potential. Nobody in my lifetime had ever seen a Paragon in real life.

At least … I didn’t think they had.

“No, it can’t,” Sina said.

“What is it then?” I asked, staring down at her. “Be quick.”

“I …” She swallowed hard and drew her hands across my face, her fingers tracing the scar that she had left on my skin from last night. It still hurt like a motherfucker. “I … I want to say that I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“It’s fine, Sina.”

Tears welled up in her big eyes, her bottom lip trembling. “I’m so sorry. I’m a monster. And I … I … I promise to figure it out, okay? I’ll do whatever I can. Whatever you want me to do. I’ll learn to control myself because I don’t wanna hurt you ever again.”

“Sina,” I said, softer this time because she looked so fucking fragile right now, “it’s okay.”

After gnawing on the inside of her cheek, Sina clutched my hand tightly and stared at the scar. “The guys told me you can … that you can heal your wounds. You should do that. I don’t want you running around with a scar on your face because of me for the rest of your life. It’s not fair to you.”

While I wanted to tell her so badly that I could heal my scar, I couldn’t. But I didn’t want her to feel bad. She was already taking this so fucking hard. And she kept apologizing to me over and over and over again.

But I wasn’t going to lie to her. She was strong. So fucking strong.

“I can’t,” I said, clenching my jaw and hoping that she wouldn’t freak out about it. I knew that she’d see this scar every day and hurt because she had caused it. That was why I had tried so hard to heal it. “I mean, I can usually heal my scars, but I can’t heal the one you gave me last night.”

Sina’s eyes widened even more. “Wh-what do you mean? Why can’t you heal that?”

“Because … it’s not from a human. It’s not from a demon. It’s not from a wolf or a vampire or a fae. It’s from no creature that you know. Not even a creature living in Durnbone.”

“What are you talking about?” she asked, backing away slowly. Fear swelled up in her eyes. “I’m just human.” She stared down at her feet and shook her head. “I’m just a human. I have to be just a human.”

“You’re not.”

“Then … what am I?”

“Your father never told you?”

With all those experiments he had run on her, he had to have known what she truly was.

“No. I mean, he … was trying to make the perfect species—at least, I think so. He did so many experiments on me that I don’t even remember half of them. And … I just … I don’t wanna be anything other than human.”

“Well, Sina …” I drew her closer to me, so she couldn’t back herself up anymore and ball up in the corner of the room. She wasn’t in this alone. “You’re so much fucking more than a human. You’re one of the strongest creatures to ever live.”

She trembled, looking so helpless and terrified. The Sina who had appeared back in Durnbone weeks ago had so many walls put up, but they were slowly shattering. Every single time we learned something new about her, she became more and more vulnerable with us.

While I didn’t do this lovey-dovey bullshit, Sina didn’t need an asshole right now. She already got a bitchy attitude whenever she talked to Calder. Right now, I needed her to fucking know that I would do anything for her.

Fucking anything.

So, I gently grasped her hands in mine and brought them up to my lips, placing them on her knuckles. “Humans teach their young to be afraid of beasts even if it’s just implicitly. But don’t be afraid of your beast, Sina. She’s fucking incredible.”

When she went to pull away, I grabbed her hands tighter.

“I can’t control myself,” she said.

“I’ll teach you.”

“I’ll hurt you.”
