Darius looked at the back French doors. “They’retaking careof a couple of people.”

“Like … my father’s people?” I asked.

Sighing softly, Darius nodded. “Look, don’t worry about it becau—” He suddenly stopped and lifted his gaze to the back door.

A pregnant human woman stood at the door and waved to us.

He jumped up. “I actually want you to meet someone.”

I straightened myself, vaguely remembering this woman from last night.

She walked into the room and unzipped her light fall jacket. “Hi, you must be Sina.”

Nervous for some reason, I stood up and guided her to one of our stools. “Yeah, I’m Sina. How are you feeling? That vampire didn’t hurt you at all last night, did he? I tried to stop him. I’m sorry if—”

“No, he didn’t,” she said, sitting and smiling at me. “I’m Hellana.”

“Hellana,” I repeated. “It’s nice to meet you. Well, is there anybody we can call, so we can get you back home? I’m sure you don’t want to stay here with a bunch of werewolves and … whatever the hell I am.”

Her sweet smile dropped. “Actually, no. This girl and I are all alone.” She cradled her baby bump, drawing her fingers against it. “Alpha Calder said we could stay in his pack for a while. We don’t have any family. Her father is … he’s not around anymore, to say the least.”

“You can stay for as long as you need,” Darius said.

“Thank you again,” she whispered.

But their conversation slowly faded from my mind. All I could seem to focus on were her words, ringing through my head over and over, like they were playing on repeat, like they had beenplaying on repeat all my life, speaking to me.

Suddenly, a piercing pain shot through my head. I clutched it and leaned against the counter, faintly remembering those words being spoken before, but not remembering who had said them. I squeezed my eyes closed, hoping to find answers. Any answers would do.

The silhouette of Mom cradling a baby—presumably me, as I was my mother’s only child—flashed through my mind.

She stood in front of my father at a large desk in my old home, rocking me back and forth. “We don’t have any family around these parts. Her father is … he’s not around anymore.”

But my father was right in front of her.

“I don’t have the money to feed her. I don’t have any place to raise her,” she continued. “I come to you, asking for help. I’ll do anything you need, anything you ask of me. Just please, she can’t die. It’s essential for …”

“For what?” my father said.

“For the sake of my species.”

When a guard informedGaian and Calder that trouble lurked at our borders, I walked back to the pack house and decided that I’d show Sina her true power without them. They either didn’t understand her powers or didn’t believe me.

There was no question in my mind that she was a Paragon.

Sina sat alone in the kitchen, finishing up a waffle for breakfast. The faint scent of the pregnant woman that Sina had saved yesterday and Darius lingered in the air, which meant that they were still relatively close to the pack house and hadn’t left Sina alone completely.

When she saw me enter, she sat up and widened her eyes. “Thayer.”

“You’re coming with me,” I said, grabbing her hand and tugging her toward the back.

She tumbled out of her seat and pulled me to a stop. “Wait, I want to talk to you first.”
