I frown. “Sasha, it’s important we pursue your allegations in a court of law.”

“You say that. But what I know can’t be punished in a court of law. Not like it should be. If I really let out the dirt I’ve got on guys like Polk…” she shudders out a frustrated breath, then shakes her head. “Forget it. I’ve got to go. Bryce is too fussy.”

“Wait, what do you know on Polk?”

“You should ask him. See you around, Delphine.” She pushes the stroller on without looking back.

I have half a mind to chase after her and make her tell me more. Stitches joins my side before I can.

“That’s Sasha Newton?” he says, no longer as green. “She’s a looker.”

I glower at him and he back pedals.

“Well, she is! Obviously, I feel bad for her situation. Why’d she run off so quick?”

“I’m not sure. But something tells me it’ll come out sooner or later.”

“Keep your eyes closed.”

“But I want to see where you’re taking me.”

“You will when I tell you to open them.”

Salvatore clutches my hand and guides me forward. As requested, I’m dressed up, walking blind in strappy high heels I can easily twist my ankle in. The rest of my outfit is no less dressy—a crimson two-piece with a top that’s cropped and a long wrap skirt that hugs my hips.

It’s my answer to Salvatore taking me out for a late Valentine’s Day surprise. My straightened hair falls in dark sheets around my shoulders as he leads me through a doorway of some kind.

“Alright,” he says in his low rasp. “Open your eyes.”

I gasp once I do.

We’re standing in Grimaldi’s, the fine Italian restaurant deserted except for the two of us. The dining room has been cleared of the dozen-odd tables that normally cover the floor. Only a single candlelit table is arranged in the center of the room.

I turn to him with a soft smile curving my lips. “Jon, you had Grimaldi’s closed for us?”

“I wanted some privacy.” He squeezes my hips from behind and places a kiss into my neck. “I feel like all I’ve been doing lately is working. It’s about time I have you all to myself.”

I hum my approval. “You’ll get no objections from me.”

Salvatore pulls out my chair at our dinner table and then takes his own.

My eyes rove over him as he does. It never fails to make me breathless how sexy I find him. How this bone-chillingly dominant and violent mafia boss has fallen so in love with me, when he could’ve walked away so many times. He could’ve given up on me throughout the many years we spent apart, and yet he did the opposite—he kept a close eye on me. He made sure I was safe and taken care of even when I had no clue about his machinations.

And though he sometimes interfered in my life in ways I didn’t appreciate, like sabotaging my past relationships, I’ve come to understand why. Salvatore didn’t want me with another man any more than I’d ever want him with another woman. He saved me from what would’ve been a miserable marriage to my ex-fiancé, Garrett.

Things have worked out how they were meant to work out. We’re together, married, and deeply in love.

I unfurl my cloth dinner napkin and lay it flush in my lap. “Jon, this is our first Valentine’s Day married.”

He cracks a grin. “Which is why I had to go all out.”

“I would’ve been just as happy cooking dinner at home.”

“And burning the kitchen?”

I laugh as a lone server arrives with a bottle of white wine and two glasses. “I’ll have to take a few cooking classes before we have kids.”
