Getting out of the car, I make my way around as she steps from the passenger side and shuts the door. I move in front of her and press her back to her car as I kiss her. My hand naturally grips the nape of her neck as I hold her to me until I feel her pulling back. Moving my hand to hers, I clasp it and walk into the restaurant.

MORGAN

Leaning back against the bleachers of the gymnasium, I watch as Cade makes his way over. He walks up the few stairs, then takes a seat behind me, one row up from where I sit as he asks, “Why are y’all hiding out in here?”

Savannah clicks around on the screen of her phone without looking up. “No point in going to class when the pep rally is in like twenty minutes.”

“There’s no point in any of this shit.” I watch as Ava enters the gym, spots us, and heads over.

“Your school spirit is right on target,” Cade sarcastically replies as he shifts closer, his knees press against my back as he guides me to rest against them. And I do gladly. I’m really starting to loathe these rituals more and more, and I didn’t think that was possible.

Dropping beside Savannah, Ava asks, “Have y’all seen Topher? I’ve been messaging him all day.”

She was avoiding him, now she’s hunting him down.

“He was in the locker room,” Cade responds.

“Okay.” Ava goes to stand before looking at Savannah. “Are they still selling tickets for the masquerade?”

“Yeah.” Savannah glances at her with confusion. “I thought you already had tickets?”

“I did… but Lenny bought them.”

A small laugh bubbles from my chest. “Don’t think he’ll be up to going. Or maybe he will as a zombie. It is close enough to Halloween to pull off a costume.”

“Morgan,” Cade nags at the mention of He Who Shall Not Be Named, but fuck, it’s true. The masquerade ball at the end of the month will be the last thing Lenny shows his face at.

Avoiding looking my way, Ava just says, “Last year, we were there like five minutes before he disappeared and left me alone all night until he showed up drunk at my place wanting a blow job.”

“Because you let him,” I reply dryly.

“I know. Thanks for the reminder.”

“Anytime.” I wave as she makes her way down the bleachers.

“If Topher comes over here, let him know I need to talk to him.”

“It’s about time those two work things out,” Savannah says, looking at the entrance of the gym. “Possibly even better now that Toph knows so he’ll be on our side and not rat us out.”

“I don’t think he would either way,” Cade says, and I actually agree with him.

“Are y’all going to the masquerade?” Savannah asks.

Cade nudges me with his knee. “Are we?”

“I am.” I go every year.

“Then it looks like I am too.”

“Aw, that’s so sweet,” Savannah singsongs as I add “Gag me” in response to her sentiment.

Cade lets out a laugh as he bends down, his lips brushing along my earlobe. “That can be arranged.”

“Oh my God. Don’t overestimate yourself.” I lean my head back so its resting on his knee as he looks down at me. “Besides, we have company, and we know you aren’t into live performances.”

“Maybe I’ll surprise you one day,” Cade teases. But that’s all it is. A tease. He can’t get past it.
