“No, just checking.” The only people I’d ever left her with were Val, Del, and our neighbor who babysat sometimes. “This is new for me.”

“I know. She’s good though.” He motioned to the screen which showed a head full of curls peeking from beneath her comforter. “And if she wakes up, Liq’s there. He’ll call if there’s a problem.”

I nodded and locked my phone, tucking it back into my purse and then reaching for my drink.

“You perform here a lot?”

“Not a lot. A few times though.”

“This place is nice.”

“It is. I don’t go out much, but when I do. It’s usually here. You sure it meets your standards?” I raised my face back to his and a shiver tore through me from his blistering gaze.

“Yes, why?”

“You’re uncomfortable. At first I thought it was about leaving Gracie but that’s not it. You’re uncomfortable being here.”

“I’m not,” I lied.

He was right. The only social spot I’d been to in the past five years was the bar where I worked and The Bottom didn’t come close to touching the elegance of this place.

My eyes lowered to the trail of skin exposed from the short sexy dress that didn’t cover much of me. It was beautiful and I loved the way it hugged my body, reminding me that I was more than just Gracie’s mother. It had been a very long time since I’d felt the way I did tonight.

Sexy.

Desirable.

Like a woman.

But I also couldn’t curb the anxiety I felt from being here with him. If I chose Jaasir the way he wanted me to this would be my life. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to accept being thrust into what this life entailed.

“You are.” He reclaimed the space I’d created between us, planting a light kiss to my bare shoulder. My feverish skin responded, coming alive with the need for more of him.

“It’s been a long time since my life involved anything other than Gracie.”

“Is this too much?”

“No…” I huffed, relaxing into him.

“You sure?’ His hand caressed my jaw, pulling my gaze up to his. My heart thudded against my chest, my lungs filled with a heady cocktail of desire. So potent and addictive.

“I’m sure.”

“You’re full of shit.” His smile ignited, followed by a laugh that felt like a caress covering me in a rich timbre that warmed against my defenses.

“I’m not.”

“You are, but I get it.” His eyes swept over me. “I want you here but if you’d rather leave…”

“No. I’m fine. I’ve seen videos of your performances. I want to experience the real thing.”

The cockiest smirk I’d ever seen settled onto Jaasir’s handsome face. “You’ve watched videos of me performing.”

Shit.

Caught.

“Yes.”
