Chapter12

Bella

Icall an emergency friend meeting as soon as I get back to my apartment that night. Morgan and Ellie are both busy but promise to make time for me tomorrow if I can come into the city. I agree and think about what the hell I’m going to tell them. I think it’s time my friends know the truth but I don’t know if that includes telling them the truth about Dylan. I take the night to sleep on it, hoping I’ll have thought more about it in the morning.

In the morning I head back into the city, this time dressed a bit more causally. I wear one of the tops that Ellie picked out to soften her up. I knew clothes are the way to her heart. She’d surely remember a top that there was no way Morgan would pick up on. Morgan has no idea what this meeting is about but I feel it is only fair to include her too. I don’t want to run into her and have her blindsided by Dylan and I if she ends up coming to a work event with Lucy. She’s been texting us about how good things have been going on that side and how maybe there is something between her and Lucy.

“So, we ordering brunch first or are we spilling our guts first?” Morgan asks as soon as the three of us sit down for brunch at one of our favorite restaurants.

“Brunch first, well at least a mimosa.” I sigh.

“Okay.” Morgan happily flags down the waitress and orders us each an unlimited mimosa to start.

Ellie avoids eye contact with me, which is something she only does when she’s angry with me. I get it, I acted weird last night but it wasn’t like she didn’t say some things too. We are both in limbo and I want it to be fixed before things feel worse.

“Here ya go.” The waitress brings our drinks over and a pitcher of mimosas for us to share.

“Thank you,” we all say and clink glasses before taking a sip. Then Morgan and Ellie both look at me expectantly.

“So, I know things have been a little different with me lately…”

“You seem more confident,” Morgan says with a smile.

“Less shy,” Ellie points out.

“Yes, so I got a new job. And it’s really helped with my confidence issues. I love it but it can be a little controversial so I was hesitant to tell you guys about it.”

“What are you working on a Republican campaign or something?” Morgan jokes with a laugh.

“God no.” I shake my head. “I’m an escort.”

Morgan and Ellie’s mouth’s drop and I clench my jaw waiting for them to pick it up. I pause, hoping that the next thing to come out of their mouths will be words of encouragement. They look at each other and then back at me, closing their mouths.

“You’re working with Sara then?” Morgan finally asks.

“Yes, and just like Sara, it’s all PG stuff.”

“Like what?” Ellie asks.

“We just talk and hang out but it’s nothing more than hand holding,” I explain.

“That’s interesting then,” Morgan offers, clearly at a loss for words.

“I like it, I get to meet new people and help with their loneliness. It makes me feel like I’m helping in some kind of way,” I explain.

“So this is why you’ve been in the city without seeing us?” Ellie asks.

“Yes, I’ve had clients meeting me in fancy hotels and I didn’t know how to tell you guys the truth. But I hate keeping things from you.”

“Well, I’m so glad you told us. I’m not judging you at all.” Morgan smiles and reaches for my hand.

“Thank you,” I say with tears brimming in my eyes. I was so worried for nothing.

“We just want you to be happy,” Ellie adds.

“I really am, I swear I am.” I smile, and the tears spill over on my cheeks.

“Let me get you some napkins.” Morgan jumps up to get some, leaving Ellie and I alone.
