“Was that woman you were with last night, is she one of your clients or is she actually your girlfriend?” Ellie whispers.

“B-both,” I admit. “She’s a client who hired me to be her fake girlfriend for the next few months. But she works with Morgan’s boss. So I have to be careful about what I say.”

“You should tell Morgan, before you end up running into her at a work function or something,” Ellie says and I know what she’s saying. So she doesn’t end up blindsided just like she was last night.

“Here you go.” Morgan comes back with a handful of napkins.

“There’s one more thing I should mention,” I add.

“Yes?” Morgan sips her mimosa quietly.

“I’m seeing Lucy’s friend, Dylan. She’s a client who hired me to fake date her for a few months,” I explain.

“Oh shit, so we might run into each other then! Wait, does Lucy know?” Morgan raises an eyebrow.

“No, I don’t think anyone does. I’m technically breaking a lot of rules by telling the two of you, but it was so hard to keep any kind of secret for you.”

“Shit, okay. Well you know I can keep a secret for you,” Morgan reassures me, and I let out a deep breath.

“Is it weird pretending to be with someone?” Ellie asks.

“No, like you’d think it would be and there are times where it sort of feels real, but for the most part it’s pretty chill.” I shrug.

“Well, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way. I think there’s something going on between Lucy and I.” Morgan squeals.

“Really?” I ask excitedly.

“Yes! She’s been extra affectionate and sending me all these vibes that I think she likes me. I just don’t know what to do about it because she’s my boss. I feel like I have to wait for her to make the first move.”

“You definitely should.” Ellie and I nod.

“But it’skillingme,” Morgan exaggerates.

“Yes, but in the end it’ll be so worth it,” I remind her.

“That’s true.” Morgan sighs.

We order food and for the rest of brunch, I feel lighter. Like telling my friends was this weight I didn’t even know I was carrying around. But now that they know, I feel like a feather.

After brunch, I meet up with Dylan since I’m already in the city. She says she has some sort of surprise for me but I’m not sure what it might be. I am going to start moving my stuff in next week, it won’t take me too long to pack up what I have in my room. It is more so that I have to tell Sara I am going, but I know she’ll be excited for me. And the truth is, I am excited for me. I’ll finally be living in NYC, even though I love the small town vibe, I do love the city too. Something about it just feels like a home to me recently.

“Where are we going?” I ask Dylan when I get to her apartment.

“You’ll see,” she says vaguely.

“Why can’t you tell me?” I ask suspiciously.

“Why can’t you let it be a surprise?” she retorts.

“Because I hate surprises.” I frown.

“Noted, but this is still going to be one. Let’s go.” She rushes me out of her apartment, looking at her Apple watch. Is this something we had an appointment for? Maybe a reservation for?

“Don’t try to guess, just be surprised for once,” she says, looking at me. We’re walking to the subway hand in hand, and I wonder what kind of date this might be.

“Okay.” I nod but in my head I am still trying to figure out where she could be taking me. Of course, this is also New York City so Dylan could literally be taking me anywhere.

We get on the subway and it’s one of those really hot cars despite the cool temperature outside. It would be perfect if they didn’t think we needed heat on a sixty degree day. By the time we’re getting off I’m almost sweating through my jacket. Fanning my face, I wipe the little beads of sweat from my forehead and hope that Dylan hadn’t noticed. Not that it should matter, but I don’t know why I am suddenly self-conscious about a little bit of sweat.
