We had a glorious time in Paris. He was not Wayne, but then, he couldn’t have been. I knew I loved Codrin. I knew he loved me and Emily. That was enough.

We returned from Paris and found big news waiting for us. The acquisition and merger with the Indianapolis institution had been approved. Since Codrin and I had been on the evaluation team, he and I would weave the two entities into one. The task was daunting, but we were up to it. The larger news came from Emily.

As soon as Codrin delivered me to my home, he went looking for Emily. I followed him into Emily’s bedroom, wondering what he was going to do. I watched as he sank to one knee in front of my daughter.

“Emily,” Codrin began. “I have asked your mother to marry me. She said yes, but the yes was conditional. I have to ask you if I can be your father.”

“Me?” Emily asked. “You want to be my father?”

Codrin nodded. “More than anything in the world.”

Emily tilted her head to one side. “I suppose you can if you listen to me. Mommy doesn’t always listen.”

“I will listen with both ears and my heart.”

Emily grinned and threw out her arms. I watched as the two people I loved the most hugged. Tears came to my eyes.

The wedding would be a small, quiet affair. Emily would join us at the altar. Marcie would keep Emily while Codrin, and I honeymooned in Hawaii. The last person I invited to the wedding was the Colonel.

To my great surprise, he accepted.

I was thrilled.
