“We don’t know if he knows that,” Rosalie explains.

Oh. Now I understand the urgency.

“What happens if there isn’t an heir?” Greyson questions.

Rosalie and Skylar look at each other and shrug. “I think there is something about the country turning into a republic and the state councilors will become head of state,” Rosalie explains.

“Only problem is the councilors have all been put in place by Valerius. He is in their pockets,” Skylar adds.

“You think he wants the marriage between your sister and his son to be a show marriage for the country, like a mask over what would be happening behind the scenes, which is that he is the ruler of Aegina?” I ask.

“That sounds like something he would do,” Rosalie answers.

This is one big political mess their father has left the girls in.

“Our father promised us for years that he had changed the law for Magnolia to be his heir. Unfortunately, when the will was read he had started it but never signed off on it,” Rosalie explains.

“So, he was going to change the law?”

The girls both nod.

“Then he died before he had the chance to,” Skylar states.

“And you think Valerius had something to do with your father’s death?” I ask them.

They both sit there in silence for a couple of moments. “Maybe. It doesn’t make sense why he would kill our father when he was about to get everything he wanted. Magnolia was betrothed to Dante. That wedding was going to happen with him dead or alive. If he was able to change the laws then Dante was going to be the future prince consort. Which would be better for Valerius,” Rosalie states.

“Unless it was someone else who wanted your father dead. You did say he had enemies,” Greyson adds.

Rosalie and Skylar look at each other.

“Guess we hadn’t thought about that. There might be others with an agenda for our country.” Rosalie sighs.

“You sure you still want to join this family?” Skylar asks me with a chuckle.

“I have a feeling it’s not going to be boring with you all, but I’m still all in,” I say, smiling back at her.

“Well, welcome to the family then,” Skylar says, standing up and walking over and giving me a hug. “Guess I should be welcoming you to the family too, Greyson.” She smiles, walking over to where Greyson is standing and hugs him. Her acceptance of our non-traditional dynamic makes me happy. “Might head back to my room then, you all seem to have a lot to talk about. Thank you again, Your Highness for choosing Rosalie. She will be the best future Queen of Friendsburg you could have ever wished for.”

Rosalie’s face softens at her sister’s praise.

“Let me walk you back to your room,” Greyson says.

“Thank you,” she says as they both walk out of the room.

ROSALIE

“I’m sorry about all that, she’s protective.” I apologize for Skylar.

“You have nothing to apologize for. I would rather know what I am up against before than being blindsided.”

“I’m worried that I’ve pulled you and your country into something bigger than you bargained for.”

“Come here,” he says, tapping his hand against the desk, indicating for me to come over to him.

I stand and slink over to his desk, wiggling my hips as I rest on the edge beside him. He rolls his chair out and shuffles over so that I’m standing in front of him, before sliding in closer to me. His thighs stretch out on either side of me, fencing me in. My breath hitches at his proximity as those blue eyes stare up at me, with so many questions behind them. The tiniest blush begins to bloom across my cheeks, I’m affected by his closeness to me.
