“Why didn’t you tell us?” Skylar asks, looking hurt over my secret.

“I’m sorry, Sky. You know what our father was like. I wouldn’t have been surprised if he bugged our bedrooms. He was so paranoid over us losing our virginities.”

“And we all know why. They fetch a higher price.” Magnolia sighs.

“Were you ever going to tell us?” Skylar asks me.

“No. Maybe. I don’t know,” I tell her honestly, and I know my answer hurts Skylar but it’s the truth. Our father had scared us so much that I couldn’t trust my sisters with my secret.

“Then there were two.” Skylar chuckles, but Magnolia doesn’t. “Oh, come on …” Skylar groans. “Not you too?”

Magnolia remains silent.

“Knew it,” I say, pointing at her.

My sister refuses to acknowledge me.

“It was Dante, wasn’t it?” Skylar asks.

Magnolia still doesn’t answer but looks mighty uncomfortable under our scrutiny as she kicks the dirt silently.

“Fine, I thought I was in love with Dante when I did it. Are you both happy?” she demands.

No, it doesn’t make me happy seeing the pain on my sister’s face as she confesses her darkest secret to us.

“I thought because we were practically engaged that me not being a virgin when we married wouldn’t be a deal breaker especially as I was giving it away to my husband-to-be. He broke my heart. I thought he was different, but he wasn’t, he’s like all the other men in our lives, power-hungry thugs.” Tears well in her eyes as she relives her heartbreak.

“Hey, I’m sorry,” I say, wrapping my arm around her, feeling bad that I pushed her on the subject.

“We didn’t mean to bring up the past,” Skylar adds from her other side.

“I wanted to tell you both, but I couldn’t.”

“I hate that our father scared us so much that we didn’t think we could trust each other with our secrets,” Skylar states.

“He always talked about never sharing your secrets with anyone otherwise they would use them against you,” I muse, remembering the chats we used to have with him in his office, the pearls of wisdom he would sprout to us.

“He never wanted us to be close, and I think that was because we would be stronger together,” Magnolia suggests.

I think she might be right. I’ve been close with my sisters, but not close enough to share my innermost secrets with them. I always put it down to our age differences, but now I think it was our father’s influence too.

“Then let’s make a vow today in front of him to never keep another secret from each other again. You all in?” I turn and ask my sisters.

“I’m in,” Skylar agrees.

“No more secrets,” Magnolia adds.

“Good, now maybe we can take back some of the power we lost because of this man,” I say as we look down at his grave.

The three of us fall silent as we stare at the freshly turned dirt.

“You two are a bunch of bitches for having your sex pact without me,” Skylar says, breaking the silence.

“We didn’t have a pact,” Magnolia argues.

“Feels like it,” Skylar grumbles. “It’s not fair that I’m the last one standing.”

“You’re the smartest out of all of us for not giving in,” I say.
