"Then don't."

He groaned against my lips. "Fuck, what are you doing to me? We do not have time for this."

I needed to be close to him though. For once, I needed the reassurance that I had somewhere safe to be. "Yeah, I know." He leaned forward and kissed me, brushing his lips against mine. "Is the team okay?"

"They're starting right now. All you have to do is make it through the evening, and as soon as you do, this will all be over."

I sighed, knowing he was right. In just a few moments, this would all be over. I could go back to living my life, training and missions, and I could find out what the hell was going on with my family.

“I’m not used to being scared all the time. I can’t stand to have him touch me. And every time he does, I just want to reach for my bloody knives, which I don’t have the clearance to use.”

He nuzzled my ear. “I promise it's almost over. All you have to do is walk back out there and count down the minutes. And then you'll go home, and you can tell him to bloody well sod off. And if he doesn't listen, I will be right behind you to make him listen.”

He said that last part with a barely restrained growl that made my pussy pulse. I shook my head. “I really don't want to.” I didn't know what the hell was wrong with me. I was a bloody agent for Christ’s sake. Had the training. So why couldn't I do this?

Gabe kissed me along the hollow of my neck. “I don't want you to. Letting you go is a bloody problem right now.”

“Maybe you don't have to. Maybe we can pretend for a few more minutes.”

And with that he slanted another hungry kiss on my lips. Desperate, needy, and mine.

Tabatha

When I returned to my seat, Jennings studied me. "What's wrong with your lipstick?"

"Oh, sorry. I was starving so I shoved a bunch of M&Ms in my mouth. I guess I must have smeared it."

He frowned. "You look like you've been busy gnawing at your lips or something. Fix it."

I sighed and took my compact out. When I saw the state of it, my eyes went wide. I looked like I'd been kissed thoroughly by someone who knew how to do it.

After I fixed my lipstick, I turned to him. "Better?"

"Yes. I don't want to ever see you like that again." He handed me a drink. “I ordered you a scotch.”

I opened my mouth to say something about hating scotch and how he had no right to tell me what to do, but I kept my mouth shut. I only had another hour and a half to go, and I would be okay. Everything would be okay.

But ten minutes in, he took out his phone and scowled at it.

He leaned forward. "We're going."

"Excuse me?"

"We are leaving. It can't be helped."

Shit, what had gone wrong? There was no discreet way to notify my team, but Gabe would be watching, so he would know. He was here somewhere, keeping an eye on me. I had backup.

When we arrived at the car, Jennings was in a mood. "Drive. Back to the mansion."

The driver just nodded, and I frowned. Something was off. "What’s going on? Is something wrong?"

The car pulled away from the curb, and we started to make our way down the back roads. It had rained earlier, but having given the night a reprieve, it was now clear, but the roads were still slick.

Jennings placed a hand on my thigh. "Tabatha, love, I'm going to ask you a question, and I really do need you to be honest. Did you ever tell anyone about my mother's summer house?"

Shee-it! I frowned. "What are you talking about?"

His hand squeezed hard on my thigh. "My mother's summer house. Who did you tell?"
