“I know. Listen, I called my mate Sam. I'll just head to the police station."

The more I looked around, the more it seemed like Kira had just buggered off on holiday. There were some clothes gone, but not enough to suggest that she'd moved out and just left everything.

Where the hell are you, Kira?

We walked into the police station, and I felt a little out of place. I’d spent so much time away from home it almost felt like I'd forgotten how to act. At the sergeant's desk, I asked for Sam.

Riley was on edge at the police station. Thanks to Kira, he'd been in a bit of trouble in the past, but nothing since I'd gotten a hold of him again and got him back in school. Cops still made him cagey, though.

“Relax, they're going to help us find her, remember?”

“Yeah, old habits.”

We waited around for five minutes before the big, burly, redheaded South African came barreling down the stairs.

Like Riley, he encapsulated me in a massive hug. “You are a sight for sore eyes. Look at you. What's with this hair?”

“You guys act like you've never seen a woman with straight hair before.”

“The curls are sort of your signature.” Sam laughed and led us back to his desk.

I took a seat, but Riley stood behind me keeping his arms crossed. "Sam, mate, sorry to drop in. I didn't anticipate just turning up here. But were you able to find anything?”

He shook his head. “Love, I wish you’d called. I would have told you that I didn't find anything. She's probably going to turn up after a massive bender.”

Riley frowned. “I know my sister. She wouldn't just leave me.”

Riley's voice was passionate, but Sam was kind. “I understand that. But this is still Kira we're talking about. There is a likelihood she's just gone on a walk-about and will turn up eventually.”

I frowned and glanced back at my brother, who glowered at Sam. "You had to have found something. Anything.”

He sighed. "Let me pull out my notes. Hold on."

I could tell he was doing it for Riley. Well, really, he was doing it for me. Sam had been a good mate. And I knew there was a part of him that thought maybe if I'd moved back to iKapa, we would have given it a go. He'd always joked he wanted to see our redheaded children.

He grabbed one of his notebooks from his drawer and flipped the pages, then nodded when he got to the page about the day that he'd gone to check Kira out. “One of the neighbors said that there'd been a blonde woman there more than once or twice. She'd seen her actually speak to Kira, but hadn’t seen her for a minute.”

“A blonde woman. Anyone get a name?”

Sam laughed. “Come on. I’m lucky I got that much.”

“Listen, mate, we've tried everything. We've emailed her, we've called her. It’s not like her to at least not answer a call or ask for money.”

Sam shrugged. “I don't know what to tell you.”

"I appreciate you looking for my sister. Please let me know if anything pans out.”

He nodded. "Of course. How long are you staying?"

“A day or two. I gotta get back. I have a project at work.”

His eyes narrowed, seeing through the lie. I always thought one of the reasons we wouldn't have worked was he could always tell when I was lying, but he would never bother to ask me why or what about.

When we left the station, Riley was in a hell of a mood. “I knew they weren't going to do anything.”

“It's Sam. He's telling us the truth. He doesn’t have much to go on. But look, I’ll ask some friends in the foreign service to dig around in international channels, okay? Maybe she ventured out for a bit, got in trouble over the border."

“I appreciate it. I know Kira isn't always nice, but she’s my sister.”
