“Listen, I don't want you worrying about anything. You just go to school and do what you're supposed to do. Come on, you owe me a braai. I’m starving.”

As I headed to the car, I let the sounds and sights of home wash over me, the clouds rolling off Table Mountain in the distance. I let myself relish being home, even though I was worried.

As we walked back to Riley's car, I got a text.

Gabe:

Where are you? Did you land?

Tabatha:

You almost sound like you care.

I replied and then snapped a quick picture of Riley and sent it back to Gabe.

My brother frowned at me. “Why are you so smiley at the phone?”

“Nothing. Just making a coworker crazy."

He lifted his brow. "I generally try not to make my coworkers crazy. Why are you smiling about it?"

"Because he's a prick and it's fun."

As he climbed into the driver’s side of the car, he grinned at me. "Oh, so you like him."

“No such thing. He is a pain in my arse.”

Gabe’s response pinged.

Gabe:

Get what you need and get your arse on a plane.

Tabatha:

Make me.

Gabe:

You know I have all sorts of fantastic ways to make you comply.

Me: If you want me, you're going to have to come and get me.

Tabatha

Today was the day. I’d gotten back late yesterday afternoon, just in time for a briefing on my date tonight. I’d have two junior agents with me inside the restaurant, Gabe in my ear, and only my wits for weapons.

I slid diamond threaders in my ears and stood back. Makeup and hair had already come and gone. The dress I wore was elegant. Red and black, flirty, with a mermaid cut. Sleeveless. I looked good.

Not just good, good enough to be enticing. This had to work.

I was so distracted, I couldn't even focus on this stupid mission.

With Rook, Sam, and myself all coming up empty with very few leads, I was worried. I couldn’t shake the feeling that Kira had gotten herself into trouble. Trouble I was likely going to have to bail her out of. I'd done my due diligence. I’d called her friends and the police department in Cape Town just to verify that she wasn't in jail somewhere, because hell, if she was in jail, I might be inclined to leave her there for a while.

Are you sure you're actually going to leave her there? You're half the reason she doesn't stay out of trouble. You're always there to bail her out.

That had to stop. The biggest mission of my life, and she's gone AWOL? Jesus.
