Sonia inhaled sharply, her ass clenching. Brendan couldn’t help picturing her squeezing the plug. For a minute there, he’d forgotten all about it.

“Brendan, listen. I—” She tipped her head toward the noise of the party beyond the door. “I meant what I said. I can’t have sex right now.”

Dropping his hands, he took a deep breath, tamping down the urge to convince her with sweet words and touches. To whisperRelax, baby, you can.

“Okay. Why don’t we talk instead?”

“About what?”

“Anything.”

Sonia plucked uncomfortably at the hem of the tight red dress. “Yeah, all right.”

“How about a T-shirt?” Brendan offered. “I’ll loan you one.”

“Thanks.” She flashed him a grateful glance. As he got out an old University of Connecticut tee, she unzipped the dress and let it fall to the floor.

It took everything he had not to stare. But from the corner of his eye, Brendan admired her graceful shoulders and firm calves. A hint of pink peeked out from the bare vee between her thighs.

Quickly, he handed her the shirt. Averting his eyes, he shrugged off his suit jacket and hung it up. He began to loosen his tie.

“Okay if I take my work clothes off?”

“Please do,” Sonia said abruptly. When he turned, a hint of a grin flitted across her face. “Not that I don’t like them.”

“T-shirt and boxers okay?”

“More than okay.”

He quickly stripped and turned to face her. The ancient UConn shirt hung past her thighs, but the thin gray material clung to her figure. Sonia, in his shirt, was even sexier than in the red dress. At the thought of her scent getting on it, his balls tightened.

He was never going to wash this shirt again.

“So.” She cocked her head, one hip jutting out.

“So.” He meant to put her at ease, if such a thing was possible with Sonia. But what came out instead was, “Can I ask you a personal question?”

Her guard went up again. He saw it in her eyes. She swallowed hard, crossing her arms over her chest. “All right.”

“You’ve always come across so confident.” He wanted to touch her, but he kept his hands at his sides. “How does that go along with being afraid of the unexpected?”

Her lower lip caught in her teeth. “Iamconfident. I just get knocked on my ass sometimes. Usually, I deal with it better.”

“If you hate surprises, why’d you make me the offer that you did? I could surprise you, any second. You’re not in control.”

Sonia’s lashes fluttered. It seemed like she wanted to step back, but she held her ground. “I’m in controlbecauseI made that offer. With you, I can expect the unexpected. I know you’ll catch me off-guard, so I’m prepared.”

“But it must make you so uncomfortable.”

Her flush deepened. “Yeah, well, obviously I like it.”

Brendan thought of all the times he’d sneaked into her dance shows, exhilarated and scared at the prospect of seeing her. Riding the Metro, his nerves humming. Feeling off-balance.

“I get that,” he said softly.

She stepped closer to him. “Can we” — her eyes darted down to his crotch and back up — “maybe watch a movie or something? You could show me one of your favorites.”

“Of course.”
