Early August

Jenna

I sat at the desk in my office, grading the last of the semester’s essays, Asking Alexandria blaring in my earbuds.

One of them was snatched out of my ear, and I looked up on a gasp.

Straight into Talon’s ocean blue eyes.

“I knocked, but you didn’t hear me,” he said, voice pitched low, which I’d learned over the past week meant he was thinkingthoughts. Thoughts I tended to like a lot, thoughts that seemed to always turn outverygood for me.

So I took in that light in the back of his eyes and grinned, “What are you doing here?”

He pulled out the other bud, “Taking you to Bernie’s for oysters and beer.”

“That’s myfavorite,” I breathed, already reaching for my Neverful.

“Heard it might be,” Talon said, hand gliding down my hair to the small of my back while he escorted me out.

And the night turned out pretty much exactly like the light in his eyes promised it would.

Mid August

Gate

Gate leaned back in his chair and eyed the surveillance photos scattered across his desk.

Stash and Rooster had nearly come unglued when they lost Edward, so the two of them had mainlined Monster and Red Bull until they found him.

In Atlanta and so far up Blaine Freemont’s ass that the club couldn’t touch him without a reckoning akin to Armageddon.

Talon knew.

Jenna didn’t.

And Gate wanted to keep it that way.

The way Gate saw it, some people just needed killing, and if one more death on his conscience helped his brother’s girl move on with her life, then Gate figured he could keep on sleeping just fine at night.

When he wasn’t dreaming about Anna, at least.

So Gate pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number he’d memorized over thirty years before.

The voice on the other end of the line was just as cultured and feminine as it had always been, even if the British accent had faded over the years.

“Hello?” she answered.

“I need a missing person declared dead,” Gate said.

“You mean wiped?” she asked.

“Just dead” Gate answered.

“Do you have a body?”
