Late August

Cassie

Theclackof pool balls was a mere whisper compared to the music pumped through the speakers of the compound great room.

Cassie leaned back against the bar next to Lucky, and they both watched Talon take Jenna at yet another game.

Deuce hit the great room from the hall, spotted the game, and made his way over.

Cassie had learned enough about Deuce from her mom’s days of research that she straightened, waiting to see what would happen.

And when Deuce made the table, Jenna smiled a smile that didn’t reach her eyes and offered to get Talon a fresh beer.

Deuce stopped her with a hand on her arm. “I was a dick, sweet. But I was a dick for a reason.” He looked around the great room at the brothers who partied and lounged and played. “And I won’t apologize for it, but I hope we can be cool.”

Jenna cocked her head to the side and studied him for a beat. “We can be cool.”

“Good, now you ready to get your ass kicked?” Deuce asked, taking a pool cue from the rack on the wall.

“Talon’s been doing a pretty good job of it already,” Jenna said.

Deuce laughed, “He’s a cupcake.”

“You know, I have a friend who’s pretty good,” Jenna said, leaning on her cue.

“Can’t beat me,” Deuce smirked while Talon racked.

Talon went back to his seat on the leather couch, and Cassie watched him watch her mom, and she liked what she saw.

She especially liked it when Talon stood, walked to her mom, and slid his hand up into her hair while he leaned over and brushed his lips across her cheek.

Her mom glowed, and Cassie liked that most of all.

Cassie nodded to Talon and Jenna. “They’re good, aren’t they?” she asked Lucky.

Lucky nodded, “She got a good one. He’s solid.”

“Think he’ll hurt my mom again?” Cassie wondered aloud while Deuce ran the table and Talon grinned like he’d won the lottery every time he looked down at the woman on his arm.

“No way. Never seen him like this, and I’ve known him my whole life. Probably wants to kick his own ass for how he acted to begin with,” Lucky answered.

And at that moment, Talon wrapped her mom up, tipped her head back, and kissed her.

And Lucky watched while Cassie grinned and said, “She’s happy. I can live with that.”

Early September

Talon

When he hit the backdoor, Jenna stood in the kitchen in one of his tees, a pair of knee socks, and nothing else, and Talon thought he’d never seen anything sexier in his life.

So, when he pulled the envelope from his pocket and slid it across the kitchen counter, he did it with a gleam in his eyes and a clear agenda on his mind.
