“V.P.” he answered.
“Quite a notch for her bedpost,” I said, some soft part of me shriveling and dying on the inside.
“For hers, yeah, but not for his,” Ryder said.
I shot Ryder a glance over my shoulder, but he was looking at the room, gauging our reception.
Mocha skin called out, “Ryde, bring your girl over here so I can see what all the fuss is about.”
Ryder did the hand to my back thing again and led me to the man’s table.
Ryder pulled out a chair for me, and I sat. He joined me in front of a half empty cup of coffee.
“Brick, this is Jenna. Jenna, Brick,” Ryder said.
The older woman came over with a coffee pot, poured a fresh cup for me, and filled the guys up while she was there.
“Breakfast?” she asked.
“That’d be great, yeah,” I answered.
“I’m Linda,” she said.
“Hi, I’m Jenna.”
“I heard. Try not to piss anybody else off.”
She left.
I doctored my cup with cream and sugar. “What’s breakfast?” I asked.
“Eggs, bacon, toast,” Ryder supplied.
“Cool,” I said. “Is she gonna poison it?”
Brick laughed.
Ryder shook his head on a grin. “Don’t let her bother you. She’s just protective.”
I turned to the man on the other side of me. “Nice to meet you, Brick,” I said, clocking the patch on his cut that declared him the club Sergeant at Arms. I breathed deep.
Brick glanced down at the patch and then back at me. “I see you know what that means.”
I shrugged, “Generally speaking, yeah.”
“She’s here for some interviews. Gate’s invitation,” Ryder said, watching me over the rim of his cup.
I sent him a smile of thanks.
Brick looked back and forth between us and then up to Gate’s office where Talon disappeared earlier.
He pushed his empty plate back and finished his coffee. “I’ve got to head out to work. But you wanna talk, let me know.”
“Gate told me to hang around, so anytime I’m here and you’re free, I’d love to chat.”
“Chat,” Brick laughed, shaking his head. “Too much, girl.”
He rose, called a thanks to Linda, and disappeared out the front door.
