“Maybe I am. We probably won’t have that opportunity.”

“Maybe it’s for the best.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s already hard enough not wanting to maul you.”

All of a sudden we were approached by a group of girls, some from the cheer squad. “Henners! What are you up to?”

“Hey,” I said to Samantha, who usually talked me up a lot, and I hoped that wouldn’t be the case tonight. I felt annoyed, wishing I could be invisible so I could spend all the time I wanted with Lark. “Just hanging with my friend Lark.”

“Hey, Lark,” one of them said. “That’s an interesting name. Do you go to Roosevelt?”

“Yeah, I’m a dance major.”

And then it got awkward as they hounded me with questions about partying and football, eventually asking us to hang with them. “Actually, the other guys are at the games section. Why not go meet them, and after we get more tickets, we’ll head back over.”

“Okay,” Samantha said. “See you soon!”

I blew out a breath when they left.

“Are you sure you don’t want to go hang with them?”

“Now who sounds jealous?”

Lark held my gaze. “Maybe I am.”

The stitch in my chest intensified. “Hey, do you want to get out of here for a little bit? Go back to the dorm and hang out before we meet up with our friends again?”

He glanced over his shoulder. “Do you think anyone will suspect?”

“Suspect what?” I scoffed, that same frustration bubbling up. “That we’re friends?”

“You’re right,” he said, then grinned. “Look who’s being brave.”

I nudged his elbow. “We better go before I lose the courage.”

We walked out of the carnival and headed toward the dorms, thankfully not running into anyone on the way.

As soon as I opened the door and clicked on the light, I yanked him inside and promptly twisted the lock. Spencer being gone tonight was a gift I couldn’t pass up, no matter the consequences.

I panted openly because the anticipation of being in close quarters with Lark again was making my heart beat at such an erratic rate I was liable to go into cardiac arrest.

“I’ve been meaning to show you something.” I headed toward my dresser.

“What?”

I opened my drawer and pulled out the letter he’d written me.

“Holy shit, you were telling the truth.”

“Of course I was.”

Lark looked at it, reading the words. “Damn, I sound so young.”

I snickered. “Wewereyoung. I’ll admit I stared at the XOXO for days afterward.”

“You did?”
