I swallow hard and look down at the small timer on my chest, forcing myself to stay calm.Keep it together, Shaw. You can figure a way out of this.

“Don’t worry. You won’t feel a thing. But everyone around you who isn’t taken out by the blast is going to get infected with the Black Widow virus. The strain I had DeLazzer create is airborne and it will spread its toxicity quickly. Within ten minutes, everyone within a mile radius will be infected. That number will double, then triple, and Spain will be the first country to fall.”

“Why?” I ask, unable to comprehend Atkins’s end game. “What is the point of killing innocent people and spreading death and destruction?”

“Because chaos is fun,” he says. “And you know what else is fun? Power.” He reaches into his pocket and removes a syringe filled with what I’m guessing is the antidote. “And if I’m the only person with a cure to stop the virus, guess who just became the richest, most powerful man in the world?”

I feel sick to my stomach. Millions of people are going to die a horrible death if this virus gets released.

What am I going to do?

I have to stop it, but I have no idea how.

???

Atkins wastes no time putting his plan into action. Ten minutes later, I’m back in the SUV, this time alone, and on my way to the marketplace. I don’t waste any time either, slipping the earpiece in and turning it on in the hopes I can get a plan of my own put together.

“Kane?” I whisper.

He answers right away. “Sailor! Oh, Jesus, thank God. Are you okay? Where are you?” he demands.

I can hear the slight panic followed by relief. But what I’m about to say is going to put him in an absolute tailspin. “Kane, listen to me. Pull up your camera app. I don’t have much time.”

I hear some rustling over the comms and I yank the mini cam off my vest and turn it around so Kane can see me.

“I see you. What happened to your face?” he asks, voice turning dark.

He must see where Atkins hit me, but I don’t have time to go into that right now. Instead, I tilt the camera down and show him the vest loaded with deadly extras.

“What the fuck are you wearing?” he growls.

“They’re taking me to some marketplace full of tourists. Atkins plans to blow the vest and spread the virus. Kane, we have to stop it. I don’t know where we’re going, but we can’t let all these people die.” My voice catches and I stifle a sob.

For a moment, stunned silence fills my ear. But Kane quickly goes into mission-mode. “I’m coming to get you, Sailor. RYAN!” he barks.

“I’m here!” Ryan answers. “Sailor, there’s a GPS locator in the camera. I’m tracking you right now.”

“Where?” Kane demands.

Even though I know he’s trying to remain calm for my sake, there’s no mistaking the sense of urgency and fear in his deep, gravelly voice.

Ryan rattles off an intersection and I hear Kane’s car tires squeal and the motor rev as he floors it. My Boston man just ‘banged a uey’ and my heart constricts. He’s coming for me. Maybe we can do this.

“They must be headed to Mercado del Castillo,” Ryan says.

“What’s on your vest, Sai? Tell me and Ryan,” Kane says, voice low.

“Um, C-4 and vials of the virus and a timer,” I tell them, trying to keep my voice steady.

“Does she see wires?” I hear Dash ask in the background.

“Do you see wires?” Ryan echoes.

I study the different colored wires coming out of the panel and leading to the C-4. “Yes. Red, blue and white.”

There’s a buzz of conversation between Ryan and Dash and a wave of panic hits me hard. They don’t know anything about explosives. My heart is hammering and a hot tear slides down my cheek.

“Sailor, look at me,” Kane says, voice firm. “Look in the camera and listen to me.”
