I open my eyes and look at him. Even though I can’t see him, I take comfort in his voice.

“We’re going to get you back. You have to trust us -”

Crackle. Hiss.

“-and then-”

More interference. Then silence.

“Kane!” I cry.

But he’s gone. And I’m all alone again. Pulling the dead comms out of my ear, I close my fingers around it and squeeze my hand into a tight fist. My connection to Kane is gone.

I’m going to die.

And I never got the chance to tell him how I feel.

No wait.I’ve still got the camera. Even though he can’t hear me, I look right into the mini cam and mouth three little words.

“I love you,” I tell him, hoping he got the message.

Then I reattach the mini cam to my collar, squeeze my eyes shut and pray that this will all be over soon.

Chapter Eighteen: Maddox

“Sailor! Sailor!” I yell into my earpiece. Even though I can’t hear her anymore, I can still see her. I think she momentarily forgets, but then she lifts the camera, looks straight into the miniscule lens and I easily read her lips.

I love you.

“I love you, too, babe,” I instantly reply, even though I know she can’t hear me. My world shatters when I think about losing her. She’s the most vibrant, beautiful, strong and sassy woman I’ve ever met. She drove me crazy from day one, but in the best possible way.

Losing her isn’t a fucking option.

“FUCK!” I roar and slam a fist against the steering wheel. Then I suck in a deep breath, toss my phone aside and start yelling at Ryan and Dash as I race toward Mercado del Castillo. “What is the goddamn plan? I need something right motherfucking now or-”

“I got him!” Dash yells back.

“What? Who?”

“Patching Jericho in right now,” Ryan says.

Jericho “Trip” Strong is a former Navy SEAL who we’ve been working with lately. He and his team are ass-deep in a shitty situation known as Project Phoenix. I don’t know all the details, but he and the other guys are trying to defeat some really powerful people hellbent on controlling and using them to take out a list of enemies. We’ve stepped in a few times to help them out, and it looks like it’s his turn to return the favor. Having friends with skills comes in handy. Luckily thisfriend was the team’s explosives expert.

I hear a screaming baby in the background as Jericho comes on the line. “Sorry about all the noise,” he says, moving away from the unhappy little one. “Dash briefed me and I need to know what’s on the vest. Colored wires, timer, battery?”

My mind goes blank. I can’t even remember what color socks I have on right now because my brain is half-scrambled in terror of losing Sailor.

“Red, blue, white wires,” Ryan immediately answers without hesitation.

I let out a relieved breath. I completely forgot about his photographic memory.Thank fuck.

“Roger. Is there a battery, a timer? What?”

“Sailor said there’s a timer,” I immediately respond. At least I remembered something helpful.

“Okay, the easiest thing to do is disconnect the wires leading from the trigger/timer to the detonator.”

“How do I do that?” I ask, brow furrowing.
