My cheeks heat up. “I’m sorry, Cam. I swear I wasn’t hitting on your date or—”

“Lakey, I’m not blind.”

I’m getting flustered and I’m not sure how to respond. I would never go after a man my sister likes. It’s too bad you met Dash second,a little voice whispers.

“What I mean is, I think you should go for it,” Cameron says.

“What?”

“He’s not my type. And I saw the way you two kept looking at each other. You have my blessing.”

“Oh, God. Was I that obvious?”

“You were both giving each other some heated, come-hither looks,” she says and fans herself.

Embarrassment floods me. I’m not the kind of woman who has the nerve to hit on the scorching hot man. Fear of rejection makes me cautious and I don’t possess the greatest confidence. There’s always someone prettier, younger and funnier. And the men I’m attracted to are always unavailable in some way. To assume someone like Dash Slater would ever look twice in my direction is nerve-wracking and makes my heart pound.

He’s just too good-looking. Why would he settle for me? What’s so special about a preschool teacher with out-of-control red curls who would rather stay home and read about a happily ever after than take a chance and go out and find it?

I’m not daring enough for a man like him.He needs someone more like Fallon,I think, and look at a picture hanging on the wall of her skydiving. She’s holding someone’s hand and they’re both grinning at each other. Probably Ryan, the boyfriend she mentioned.

“Stop it,” Cameron says and I blink back to the present. “You’re getting in your head and doubting yourself.”

“You know me too well.” I rake a hand through my wayward curls and frown.

“I saw the spark,” she insists. “You two would look great together.”

“Cam, he looks like a model.”

“So do you.”

I scoff and roll my eyes. “Models don’t look like me. I look like…” My voice trails off as I try to think of an example. “I look like Merida from Brave.”

“Merida meets Jessica Rabbit,” she counters.

I burst out laughing. “You’re insane.”

She arches a brow. “Am I?”

“Totally.”

“All I’m saying is the man couldn’t keep his eyes off you. Maybe you should take a walk down the hall and ‘accidentally’ wander into his office?”

Her words get me thinking. What would be the harm in taking an innocent stroll? I’m too wired to sleep after everything that happened, and if he is even slightly interested, maybe I should do something about it instead of sitting on the sidelines like I always do.

Cameron closes her eyes. “Do me a favor and turn off the light on your way out.”

Biting my lower lip, I hesitate then force myself to stand up.

“Good luck,” she says in a sing-song voice.

Heart in my throat, I walk over to the doorway, flip off the light and step into the dimly-lit hallway. On silent feet, I pad down the corridor, passing closed doors, and slow down when I see Dash’s corner office door is partially open and the light is still shining brightly inside.

I’m on the verge of turning around when I decide to push myself out of my comfort zone.

Don’t be such a chicken shit,I tell myself, and walk up to his door, reach out and boldly push it open. Stepping over the threshold, my gaze moves over the empty office and I frown. He’s not here. I hesitate, wondering if I should wait to see if he returns or scurry back to the safety of Fallon’s office. As I debate about what to do, there’s a click and my attention snaps over to where another door opens.

Steam pours out behind Dash as he steps out of the private bathroom which I now notice, and he’s wearing nothing but a pair of low-slung black sweatpants.
