“Can we search your bag?” Fallon asks gently.

“Sure.” She lifts it up over her body and hands it to Fallon who begins rummaging through it.

“You had a suitcase, too?” I ask, and she nods.

“I had the taxi driver drop it off at my neighbor’s.”

“We might have to look through that, too.”

“Hmm,” Fallon hums and lifts a small clear cylinder. “What’s this?”

Lake’s dark brown eyes go wide as saucers. “That’s not mine. I’ve never seen it before.”

“What do you think?” Fallon asks me. “Open it?”

But I shake my head, warily eyeing the strange, white substance inside. It looks too thick to be cocaine or any other type of drug, and it’s not exactly a powder. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, which makes me suspicious. “No. We have no idea what it is. I can visit Blinky in the morning. He should be able to tell us exactly what we’ve got.”

Fallon nods. “Tell him I said hi.” She hands the small glass container to me and I turn it, studying the contents. Yeah, no way in hell I’m opening this in here. For all I know, some kind of chemical reaction could occur and blow this whole office up.

But one thing is clear. Lake isn’t safe, and the protector in me is going to make sure no one harms her.

“I think you should both stay the night here,” I say in a firm voice that brooks no argument. “The office is secure and there are couches and bathrooms you can use.”

“Dash is right,” Fallon says, backing me up. “Until we figure out who is after you, and why, I wouldn’t return home. I have some extra clothes in my office you can borrow, if you want.”

“Thank you,” Lake says. “That’s very kind of you.”

“It’s no problem,” I assure her. Our gazes lock and I’d love nothing more than for her to stay in here with me. Only so I can keep a close eye on her, of course.

And so I can keep smelling her soft vanilla scent.

“I’m on my way out,” Fallon tells me with a knowing smirk.

Dammit. She’s far too observant.

“Ryan and I have dinner plans,” she says, then looks over at Cameron and Lake. “Feel free to sleep in my office or Eden’s. She’s on maternity leave so you won’t be imposing. C’mon, I’ll show you.”

As Lake and Cameron follow Fallon out, my gaze dips to admire Lake’s curvy ass.Damn.There’s so much I like about this woman and I don’t know a thing about her other than her name and that she’s a teacher.

Lake came barreling into my life, interrupted my date, and made me sit up and take notice. It’s been a long time since a woman grabbed my attention so thoroughly and I’m looking forward to spending more time with her.

Professionally-speaking, of course.

I never had the teacher fantasy. The Princess Leia in the gold bikini fantasy, yes. But a school teacher?Hmm.Maybe I’ve been missing out. I think if I can fall asleep tonight, my dreams are going to be filled with short plaid skirts, wooden rulers, and bending a certain redhead over a desk.

Chapter Four: Lake

After Fallon shows us where her office is located and points out some sweatshirts in her closet, she heads home and Cameron and I go down the hall to use the restroom. It’s been a crazy evening, and if you told me this morning that I’d be spending the night at Slater Security with the extremely attractive owner, I would’ve laughed and called you delusional.

Actually, I’m not sure if Dash plans to spend the night. But a part of me hopes he does. Only because I feel much safer knowing that he’s near.

After splashing some water on my face, going to the bathroom and pulling on one of Fallon’s comfy sweatshirts, I’m sitting on the couch in her office, legs curled up beneath me, and I’m thinking about the man who came to my rescue tonight. He looks like he should be a famous actor or a model. With a slim, muscular build, killer cheekbones and that sinful combination of black hair and teal eyes, he makes my pulse leap.

I look over at Cameron as she stacks a couple of pillows on the floor and stretches out. She told me to take the couch, and she wanted to stay together. I feel bad about her sleeping on the floor, but also really grateful because the last thing I want is to be alone right now.

“I feel like I stepped into a movie,” I say quietly, looking around the office.

“A James Bond film?” she jokes, dropping her head back on the pillows and giving me a shit-eating grin.
