Grunting, I fell back and smacked my head against the wall. At the same time, her added weight only did more damage than not.

Frankie’s eyes widened as she looked into mine. My captor’s eyes were a dark shade of green, just like the forest that surrounded us. Smelled like pine as well, the woodsy smell clinging to her skin.

I was not prepared to see her pale complexion turn crimson. Quite the opposite reaction, really. Rather than looking at me in disgust like many women tended to do, Frankie looked to be at a loss for words. Might have something to do with the fact she was straddling my hips after the fall.

There was something about her, something foreign.

After being caught off guard by her slip-up, I’d released her by accident. Giving her more than enough time to yank away, Frankie must not have realized as quickly as I had.

She simply looked down at me, her plump lips quivering. Was she scared? Possibly nervous if I had to guess.

My arms went slack as she finally climbed off my body.

What in the fuck was wrong with me?

I’d killed men with fewer charges than kidnapping. I touch a woman one time and suddenly everything becomes complicated?

When Frankie got to her feet and left the room, I felt a pang of something I wasn’t too familiar with. My heart was thudding heavily in my chest.

I could only blame my concussion on my actions.

Looking down at my hand, my fingers were still tingling from touching her. Frankie was quite warm. Much more comforting than the water soaking my legs.

Hearing her move around in the house, I pictured her grabbing a weapon to put me out of my misery. I deserved it. Minutes passed of silence and I began to think she had no intention of coming back.

When Frankie reappeared, I felt an odd sense of relief. In her hands, a broom and a dustpan. She wasn’t looking at me, focused on the mess I’d made. Vegetables had scattered across the floor.

“Please move to the side,” she instructed, her eyes glued to the ground. Her face was still flushed.

Doing what she asked, words I never imagined saying slipped right out.

“I’m sorry for startling you.”

The woman couldn’t have been dumb. She had to know what my intentions were. When she looked at me, her expression spoke volumes.

“I was stupid for thinking I should treat you like a human being,” she muttered. A woman too good to be true.

I deserved nothing, yet she did cook a meal. Even after making it seem like she’d let me starve, she still intended on giving me food.

Her words stung and I deserved worse. Yet, to make me feel more terrible, Frankie didn’t just clean up my mess, she also grabbed a towel, throwing it at me. Then the final punch to the gut, she gave meherfood so I wouldn’t go hungry through the night.

How could she still be so nice to such an undeserving prick?

I couldn’t remember the last time a stranger went out of their way for me. Let alone a woman I couldn’t stop myself from looking at.

Frankie

When I first found Marco sneaking around on my land, I figured he wouldn’t be any different from the other men who made visits to my home. I was starting to believe maybe that wasn’t going to be the case. Then again, I didn’t exactly go knocking out guy after guy.

Only those who didn’t know how to use the front door, I guess.

Knocking him out would be proclaimed self-defense. Keeping him in my living room was definitely considered kidnapping. I couldn’t just let him go, not without knowing if he’d leave my home without harming me.

He did attempt to grab me and I messed that up by falling all over him. I didn’t want to remember all that. Not without getting all embarrassed. Even now, I struggled to meet his eyes.

Living out here with no one to keep me company, it was pretty natural to get all flustered. Marco might have looked like he took a few hits to the face in the past, but he was definitely the best-looking guy I’d laid my eyes on in a long while.

“If I can just talk to Jimmy and get what my family is owed, then you can let me go and we’ll never have to see each other again,” Marco tried to persuade. Lacking the anger in his voice, I almost wanted to believe he was starting to get desperate.
